The deputy chief medical officer said the UK had been an 'international exemplar in preparedness' for the coronavirus crisis.

Meanwhile, Birmingham-based GP Rizwanul Haq referred to the comments as a"ridiculous and patronising statement", adding:"I don't see her volunteering on being on the frontline without proper PPE."

Care worker Joy Parry, from Norfolk, said she found the same remark"snide" and"patronising in the extreme."Responding generally to the press conference, Devi Sridhar, a professor and chair of Global Public Health at Edinburgh University, said"some humility" when looking at how the UK could have performed better"would be great to see".

She added:"What I'd love to hear: 'We made a mistake and didn't prepare. We underestimated this virus and treated it like a flu that would run through the population."We have not protected our front-line staff, and our most precious resource. But we will try now to listen and improve our response." The focus on PPE supply has been elevated in recent days after it was revealed some hospitals were down to their last 24 hours-worth of protective gowns, and a shipment due in from Turkey on Sunday

We need civil servants who say it as it is rather than backing the govt when the evidence on PPE provision in health & social care is appalling, not enough ventilators & testing behind most countries—we need open & honest advisors rather then instruments of PR!

Facing criticism from who? Journalists and the media who are desperately scrummaging around trying to come up with tomorrow’s headline! 🙄

She’s spot on

Journalists need to show this woman more respect and stop twisting her words. She has dedicated her life to science, medicine and medical care. I think she knows what she is talking about. We are extremely lucky to have her in this country.

Failure to speak up against recklessness of dumb politicians to keep her job is cowardice to say the least. We deserve better 15k dead dont talk about preparations

This also applies to the Sky reporters , shocking the stupid questions being asked, scaremongering all the while, do you think the British public is thick, well we certainly aren't.. You all need to grow up

Her we go blame game has started.

Criticised by who?

Hubris has been the problem all along. The numbers tell the story.

Clearly she hasn’t a clue what she’s doing and explains why thousands are dying if people like her advise Boris, if she wants to see Exemplar she needs to look away from the UK to S Korea, Germany and other countries that have shown Boris was clueless

This was the one who said Cheltenham should go ahead Theyre got so many cases from there the local hospital is full The timeline her statements are there Theyre a danger to the rest of us

But don't worry, you found a GP who thinks she doesn't know what she's talking about....fml the media are simply absurd.

Im quite shocked that she thinks that testing policy in the UK has been correct & that she doesn't understand links between tests & Covid19 deaths. Seriously? 😳🙄 I actually despair. The whole thing is a mess & people are paying the price with their lives. Resignation time.

Why are we still having to listen to unelected playground journalists repeating the same questions as they try to trip up world class academics experts. It should be opposition mp’s such as starmer , sturgeon and Co, so we can hear their contributions to any future developments.

She thinks the public are fools. We are not!

I guess she used words that your activist so called journalists couldn't understand? I guess words longer than 3 letters they probably struggle with!

Medics think she, Whitty and Vallance have let them and the public down badly.

Brain dead journalists asking the same questions over and over again. And the sky’s journalist I felt embarrassed for her. Dr Harries far too bright for them. I noted thick Diane Abbott had a view too. Strange times!!

Her dismissal of international comparisons are also vague. Her credibility has been less than exemplar in the last few weeks & I've been unconvinced by her remarks about PPE & testing. These experts either need to explain things better or admit their mistakes.

She could be criticised for just standing there, get a grip and start supporting the nation instead of always trying to make a headline.

Scientists chasing honours.

So will Sky and all the media please take note from the majority of responses. The vast majority of the public are fed up with the pathetic way you are covering this. By all means criticise but find a better way of doing it....

Jenny Harries knows her stuff. She shouldn't be ashamed for putting a reporter that doesn't back in their box.

Nope.... She is right! Plus it's about time someone told the media to stop acting like kids and grow up.

She’s my favourite, she doesn’t take the crap and tells it like it is.

She was first class, shame the lefties didn't like it.

If this were WW2 you'd be urging the Allies to surrender to the superior Axis Powers.

Aww did it hurt your feelings.... the truth has a way of doing that .

The main issue is not the response. Its why we were so badly prepared. At start government was saying how prepared we were due to no deal Brexit preparation. Then it turns out we were short on everything.

Jenny Harries is ...

They are muppets, Hancock new and did nothing. Now the underfunded NHS has to get them out the shit

She was good again in face of stupid gotcha questions.

The journalist should stop asking the same questions over and over again. They're just stampeeding over eachother to try and catch someone out.

Telling the bereaved relatives of NHS workers who have died from the Coronavirus that we need an adult discussion about PPE is utter crass. She is more concerned about protecting government ministers than saving lives of NHS staff and care workers. shameful

she's been awful - said we didn't need widespread testing, Cheltenham festival was fine & now this utter bullshit corporate-speak devoid of any humanity.

Sky keeping its lefty luvvies happy after someone actually points out their juvenile questions 😅🇬🇧

Real life expert criticised by Twitter experts, makes sense.

They new this was all going to happen on the 23rd January at a Cobra meeting, but brushed it off to get Brexit done, scientist gave them all the information they needed to get repaired, but took no notice, but when the first plain load landed from China and fell ill in York. Wow

Just cut the bull shit and get on with the job, that's what us the tax payers pay you lot for ditto.

This lady is fantastic. She says it how it is and if journalists want to play games with the same stupid questions every day then they deserve a sarcastic reply.

The press are making this whole awful thing so much worse, what a mob 😡

Unbelievable, I thought listening to Edwin currie on the radio last night was laughable but is it me or everyone who is organising or involved completely brain dead I mean wtf is actually going on no plan

It doesn’t matter what any of them say they all get criticised. How about just for once tell them we appreciate them working their guts out 24-7

Preparedness? 120,000 staff short due to working conditions No PPE Staff losing lives Every single government is responsible for running the NHS into the ground, i think they have a duty to make it the most funded best service this world has seen, not treat it as a political pawn

I have followed every rule realised it's been necessary, listened to the government. But as this goes on, its clearly obvious the government has fucked this up so dont fuckin patronise me anymore. Admit your mistakes stop dodging questions every fuckin day. Longterm you will lose

Mendatious or deluded?
