How many coronavirus tests are being carried out in the UK?

On testing, Health Secretary Matt Hancock says the capacity is ahead of the government's plans to reach 100,000 tests a day by the end of the month.

But Mr Hancock stands by the goal, and says the government will be introducing contact testing"at a large scale" via a new NHS app, which will be coming soon and should"bring the number of new cases down. But he says"everyone can play their part", thanking the public for their"steadfast commitment" to following the rules, adding:"It is making a difference".

Doesn't matter on how many iff everyone has been at home for the last 4 weeks then the numbers infected should be coming down anyway, iff you getting loads of people flouting this rule then its gonna continue IMO

We don't effing care, they're meaningless.

Why are people so hung up on testing people for CV-19? All that tells you is they don't have the virus at that time. Frontline NHS / medical staff need to be tested on a daily basis if they are coming into contact with patients and they need to be tested in the workplace!!

Not as many as Hancock told us there would be by the end of April?

night Not enough

night Don't know. You seem to be the experts. You tell us as your so keen to point the finger at the government at every opportunity

night Easy answer. Not near enough by a long shot. Currently testing 16-20 thousand a day. Promised by the end of April, 100,000 tests a day. Not achievable. In the meantime, Germany will be testing 200,000/day by the end of April, up from 500,000/week. Be more like Germany!!!

We need routine screening for frontline workers, tests for all who develop symptoms, (whether or not needing hospital) tests for contacts of all positive cases.. and population screening tests to look for prevalence.. thats the number of tests needed..

BBCPolitics

Depends who you ask. Just don't ask Priti Patel and for the love of God do not ask Diane Abbott

So many experts on here!!

It depends. If you ask the health secretary, 100,000. If you ask Raab, 100,000. If you ask boris, dial tone. If you ask the care minister, she would laugh.

'in the UK' is kind of irrelevant. This is the responsibility of four different governments in the four countries of the UK

if they hit their target and they are going to test every person in country it’ll still take roughly 2 years

It won’t be enough whatever the numbers are. They could have tested the entire planet in a day but that still wouldn’t be good enough. Can we just get on with it instead of constantly looking for ways to judge. Morons.

Wait. Aren't they testing the blood for COVID-19?

Doesn't matter, you could test people today and they be negative, still gonna need testing again in a week to see if they have got it.

Enough to bolster the perception that testing is happening. Not enough to interfere with the virus' progression.

Does anyone believe official figures quoted by Tory ministers?

Oh has a proper test been developed? Not seen anything in the msm

Not enough.

BBCPolitics There is no such thing as a coronavirus test..

I wouldn’t trust Jessie from Breaking Bad to do my test!

Not enough. Nowhere near enough. We can only lift lockdown when we can test, treat and isolate. If we don’t test we don’t know where the virus is. We’ve completed less than 8,000 tests per million of the population. Germany has completed nearly 21k per million. It’s not enough.

round about half of the capacity

not enough
