Does the Alok Sharma case shed light on the way men deal with suspected coronavirus?

The Houses of Parliament are receiving a deep-clean today, after Business Secretary Alok Sharma appeared to take ill at the despatch box yesterday, visibly mopping his brow and struggling to speak.

Because as the government’s own laws state, as soon as you start to feel ill, you should stay at home and not push on until you’ve been tested and proved to not have coronavirus. How many women in recent weeks have had to have that conversation with men in their lives? Again, it’s important to say no one knows if Sharma had started to feel ill in the run-up to going to parliament and speaking.

The ‘man flu’ jokes we’ve all shared don’t seem to apply here – instead in the face of a virus that is deadly and has shut down our lives and freedoms in an unprecedented way, it seems there’s seems a resistance from men in believing that coronavirus could affect them. Boris Johnson continued to work from home when noticeably ill, sending video messages while looking clammy.
