Cornwall, be careful what you wish for – today’s faded seasides were once the UK’s hotspots

Mr Bell might be reassured to learn that his exasperation with “bloody tourists”, who fail to properly appreciate the joys of his home county, is nothing new. For other seaside resorts, the influx of visitors forced to take staycations has been a bit of a fillip, a reminder of when British beach holidays were the only type of holiday. There was a time when places like Aberdeen, New Brighton, Rhyl, Mablethorpe and Bognor Regis represented the peak of holiday aspirations. The lesson from history is that fashion has always been a major player in destination choice… and fashions change.

Margate and Southend relied on the London masses to support their buoyant visitor economies, providing them with accommodation and entertainments on a scale that would ultimately prove unsustainable as those masses began to look to new destinations after the Second World War.
