A convicted killer, who stamped on a man's head in a nightclub, fracturing his jaw, has been spared prison because it took almost five years to bring the case to court. A judge told Denton Moneypenny he had been “saved by time” and had it not taken the police and the Crown Prosecution Service so long he would have jailed him for up to six years.
“If I was sentencing you nearer the time of these offences you would be going to prison for five, possibly six, years. But the other side of the approach is, for reasons I can’t understand, these proceedings have taken far, far, far, too long to come to court and in the intervening period you finally appear to have grown up and accepted responsibility for being a father to your children.
Steve Gosnell, prosecuting this week, said the most recent offences date back to 2018 and 2019. He said the first saw police recover drugs, phones and cash from an address in Bilborough linked to Moneypenny in March 2018.
