Boiler purchasers could be due a refund following the government's last-minute decision to kick a much criticised policy, dubbed the 'boiler tax', into the long grass.
The CHMM policy, which would have made manufacturers install a certain number of heat pumps for every gas and oil boiler they sold, was announced in November 2023. Manufacturers described the policy as a "government levy" on the industry and slapped up their prices as soon as New Year's Day, four months before the market mechanism was introduced.
Nick Winser, who works at the National Infrastructure Commission said: “The NAO highlights that government’s current plans appear insufficient to meet its ambition of installing 600,000 heat pumps a year by 2028 or helping the 8m homes who need to switch from fossil fuel boilers to electrified heating by 2035 to meet climate targets,”
What a boiler manufacturer has to say Andy Kerr, founder & CEO of BOXT, the largest online boiler retailer, said: "There has been a great deal of uncertainty caused around the implementation of the Clean Heat Market Mechanism for both customers and installers.
