Analyst warns that European carmakers must adapt as they move away from fossil fuel vehicles

The regulations have prompted a rapid increase in electric car sales as carmakers scrambled to avoid fines worth hundreds of millions of euros – although Volkswagen has already admitted it will miss its 2020 target, incurring a fine estimated at around €270m.were sold in the year to November in western Europe, according to figures from Matthias Schmidt, a Berlin-based automotive analyst. Adapt

transenv Heavy industry and public transport will convert to hydrogen (with the help of renewables and carbon capture) which will take a chunk of carbon out of the sky. But EVs will not replace the ICE or Hybrids anytime soon.

transenv If we want to 'defossilize' industry (transport, heating, chemical), we will need to have carbon-neutral chemicals such as methanol (+derivatives), which are coincidentally also excellent fuels. Why should we put all our money on EVs? The defossillization challenge is enormous.

Obviously the internal combustion engine will end, however much manufacturers and Twitter commentators protest... the question is how and when

You really don’t know how cars are manufactured do you? Lines are always refitted for new models so swapping a battery and motors for a conventional engine will be easy.

Having one of these vehicles will be one of personal choice, as a 56 year old I know I’ll never buy one for myself but I know these are the future and from 2030 I’ll own older cars.

Don't throw your keys away yet! EVs are gonna be a big failure once the general public realizes all their disadvantages and improved ICE cars will be back with a vengeance. Spent 25 yrs. in this business!

In order for the 'West' to be green other countries are destroyed by mining for the minerals needed to make the batteries - that's really green isn't it - destroying drinking water supplies by pollution, deforestation, the hypocrisy is sickening.

Electric vehicles use highly polluting chemical for their batteries, are much too expensive, have limited autonomy, lack the infrastructure to charge and recycle batteries. Journalistic do-goodism doesn't make a saleable product

I’m not sure why there’d be stranded assets. A typical car has a lifecycle of about 10 years give or take. Even if ICE cars are banned in 2035, no car currently in production will be still being made then.
