More than 7,500 people work for insurance firm Admiral, which is based in Cardiff, but most of its technology staff are men.
"These continue to be the skills of the future," she said. "People shouldn't shy away from it, these skills can be taught. Admiral's CEO Anna Brailsford said there was a danger "labelling" girls in school can have a detrimental effect on their confidence.Coding is a set of instructions used to tell devices like computers, mobile phones and even traffic lights and aeroplanes what to do.
Coders, or programmers, are people who write the programmes behind everything we see and do on a computer, but far fewer girls choose to study the subject.
TheCyberSecHub In the 1960's and 1970's, math was only for the guys in public schools. Marian Yim and I were the only two girls left in a class of boys in advanced math in high school. I was the only girl in advanced math in 9th grade. Love math! Hated the harassment though.
Yes! It is scary I attended Civil Engineering School at Central Connecticut State University. Typically one woman per class with a ratio of~1:30 teacher:student. Women are great multi-taskers and studious in general, score better and are more apathetic than men very important!
I never heard the myth that tech is for men and wouldn't believe it if I did. Kudos to all the techy women out there! You ladies rock.
I've been lucky to not experience any discrimination but I know it does happen. Everyone I have worked with has been quite helpful and nice.
It’s almost 100% men, so definitely not a myth.
TheCyberSecHub Who said it was a myth? I’ve worked with plenty of brilliant female software engineers and it was never a rarity. More media BS of you ask me
TheCyberSecHub Did anyone really ever said the opposite?
Tech is generally for men though
How has 3ver thought that? I admit I've always thought it was for geeks, yeah but I've never seen it as male industry.
The sector was saturated by South East Asian men in the last 20 years on exploited sub contract work in the U.K but now they want a fair wage so opportunity for all
There is no myth, despite the fact that you (the BBC) continually stoke division. Women have coded for decades, including being part of the U.S Saturn missions that put a man on the moon. I look forward to the day when I am no longer forced to pay for this garbage.🤦🏻♂️
I dont think i’ve ever heard it said that tech coding is for men… stop being bellends…
50 years out of date
Never a myth, just BS news. I worked as an Avionics Sr Engineering manager for 20 years and almost 40 years in engineering. Many excellent women systems and software engineers during this time. Only had one bad one from NASA, lazy. We worked mainly 50 hour weeks or more.
“The male nurses deleting the myth that nursing is for women” ? Try at least some balance … maybe an example of where men are advancing in the “equality” game.
Saying there's a myth creates the idea there's a myth. Stop it. (*might be biased: son AND daughter both enjoy the coding they use for work)
I was a programmer way back in 1979, and was interviewed for an article depressingly similar to this one. Sad that 40 years on nothing seems to have changed.
It's not a myth. It's true that men make up a vast majority of engineers. There are no barriers to entry. Women choose not to pursue that field. From article: 'for software developers, web design professionals and data analysts the proportion is far lower at just 18%'
Margaret Hamilton, director of software engineering on the Apollo Guidance Computer software she and her team developed in the 1960s for the Apollo missions, here with the code listings. Out of interest, code transcript is available today in GitHub -
My company India & China branches have been staffed by a balanced staff for a long time. Problem is the western countries.
It never was a myth
Coding is for everyone.
I have said many times, that the best engineer (coder) that I ever worked with was a lady, now sadly deceased from cancer. That was c. 20 years ago.
