Sea levels are rising much faster than a century ago, reveals the Met Office's annual look at the UK's climate and weather.Conservationists warn that spring is coming earlier and that plant and animal life is not evolving quickly enough to adapt to climate change. The Met Office assessed climate and weather events for 2021 including extreme events like Storm Arwen that caused destructive flooding.
Sea levels have risen by around 16.5cm since 1990, but the Met Office says the rate of rise is increasing. They are now rising by 3-5.2mm a year, which is more than double the rate of increase in the early part of last century. This is exposing more parts of the coast to powerful storm surges and winds, damaging the environment and homes. Around 500,000 homes are at risk from flooding, scientists say.last November were only avoided because it hit during a lower than usual tide, explains Dr Svetlana Jevrejeva from the National Oceanographic Centre.
While the coastline always changes, climate change and sea level rise are exaggerating those changes, she told BBC News.

it okay we are world beating , Johnson and the Minions keep telling us We have a target [ not going to reach but sound good ] for 2030 all be under water by then
As this a report from the metoffice let’s file it under
WE WANT LINCOLN BY THE SEA...NOW...
And today's scary story is.........
All you deniers, why do we need to replace the Thames barrier with a higher one?
It isn't. Gaslighting 101. Pseudoscience. Scientism. Cultic belief instilling strong delusion. Vulgar lies for m(asses) Climate scientism for dummies and dollars. Ask BlackRock, inc. Theft. 100% criminal operations.
Utter nonsense
BS. There is no climate crisis.
Obviously one of those spring tides, which funny enough happens every spring then its ok for another year without setting any trend for sea level rise.
Hey look its another story that fits the agenda. Tax us harder daddy.
I liked the UK. Too bad.
Have they still stopped dredging the rivers?
The way to stop desertification is to bring in water and save the animals in Africa first. And plant trees in the deser
Not in Southport you can never see it !
We are island countries in the South Pacific. need to be prepared We must consume the sea as manpower Invest in your desalination plant busines
Complete poppycock based on junk in junk out climate modelling.
Sea levels been rising every year so what there point
......prove it
Why are you using an image of a storm to illustrate rising sea levels?
Try the glass of water and ice cube test. See what happens to the level when the ice cube melts? Nothing. Zip. Nada.
Wow, it's almost under water.
Why is metoffice commenting on sea level? Surely more the realm of BritGeoSurvey ?
Oh come on 🙄
Bullshit
malfouru48 Did those 2 days of summer melt some more Icebergs?
Can’t get the weather right lol
Is it? Actually is it? This has been said and pushed for a long long time but there is little evidence it is actually rising.
Of course Climate Change mumbo jumbo
Sea levels have to rise globally. It can’t be localised. Maybe think the the island that makes up the uk is pivoting in the midlands. Bottom half sinking, top half rising. Plate tectonics.
When property values go through the floor in coastal areas, estuaries, flood plains, wetlands, low lying areas and poorly thought through new builds in vulnerable areas, you watch ClimateCrisis ClimateAction gain traction in the news, in public consciousness. SeaLevelRise
Or maybe we've been sinking faster the last few years
Does that mean where going to be just like venice and I’ll end 🔝 needing to get a boat 🛶 😂
What rubbish it is absolutely not.
Any way of desalinating any of it to counter balance water shortages and river levels?
😂😭😂😭😂 of course it is….
🙄
when a city is built on the coast, it always ends up in water. it's always been like that, it's happened many times before. The earth sinks and the earth rises. When the ice disappears in one place, it appears in another place Why do people keep hitting wedges in the head?
Persistent rain today. Typical British summer. What climate change! 🙄🙄🙄
Surge
Bull dust that is a storm surge
Right, just after the hottest 🇬🇧 in history. Next you'll say the glaciers are melting at its maximum speed, but Antarctica is growing due carbon emissions from grass fed 🐄 MET is going to need new material.
Some headlines really don’t make a lot of sense now is this supposed to mean only the UK sea levels, because we are not interconnected with the oceans at all? Poor headline from the bbc
