City, Liverpool and Arsenal agree on fixture farce that could have big title say

In a thrilling three-way Premier League title race that could be settled by fine margins, Manchester City must this weekend overcome a fixture hurdle that all three championship contenders agree is an unnecessary obstacle.

It's City's turn to cope with a short turnaround following an 8.15pm kick-off on Wednesday for the win over Aston Villa but Liverpool have an identical scenario to come later in the month while the Gunners could face an early kick-off following a Tuesday night Champions League semi-final. Top flight rules introduced in May prevent any team from playing at 12.

"I know the players when I give them two or three days off and they come fresh. How you prepare Aston Villa? Three days of recovery, line-up, play. After travel, after London at 12.30pm for Crystal Palace, play. It’s a lot. Liverpool's remaining Saturday lunchtime slot, away at West Ham, comes after a Wednesday night Merseyside derby at Goodison Park. That scheduling is a prime example of what Klopp feels is a ridiculous plan with the Anfield chief against such a short turnaround.

"Playing at that time is not a problem if it’s a normal week, we’ve always said that. It’s easy to adapt. The only problem is the lack of recovery time."
