Nottingham City Council 's boss joined the authority in the middle of a global crisis and, nearly four years on, he leaves it grappling with a much more local one. Mel Barrett, who will soon step down as the well-paid chief executive of Nottingham City Council , first took up his role in September 2020 as the world battled coronavirus.
Should Nottingham City Council have managed its finances better over the last 10 years? Let us know here It is the issue of Mr Barrett's pay which has become an increasing area of focus as the council he leads has slipped further and further into a financial black hole. In what was incredibly poor timing, Mr Barrett's £6,000 pay rise was announced just as his council was told to "maximise" cuts following its Section 114 notice.
In a report ahead of a crucial meeting on its Section 114 notice, Mr Barrett said: "Although not the cause of the overspend in the current year, the situation in Nottingham is further compounded by the council's reduced financial resilience because we have had to use significant financial reserves to cover the historic losses from the failure of the council's arm's length company Robin Hood Energy which ceased trading in 2020.
Mr Barrett has certainly always struck a calm, professional and managerial tone. It was this record that made an unexpected outburst all the more surprising in March.
