Not only was Ian a source of great entertainment but he also had a tremendous ability to raise money for Choir funds; he had some great ideas and he raised thousands of pounds for the Choir over many years, through the various ideas he came up with, including a weekly lottery, football cards and his latest initiative was a Bonus Ball competition.
He organised events at Spring Terrace Folk Club in Rawtenstall to raise funds for local causes and he played the mouth organ. Ian was well known throughout Haslingden and was affectionately called ‘Strawy’ because of his blonde hair in his youth. He was also known as ‘ticket man’ because he sold tickets for fundraising events such as dinner dances and raffles.
