M&S and Aldi are at loggerheads over a cake. What’s at stake and what’s behind Britain’s love affair with the confection?

Photograph: Katherine Anne Rose/The ObserverPhotograph: Katherine Anne Rose/The Observerolin the Caterpillar first darkened M&S’s shelves in the autumn of 1990, mere weeks before Margaret Thatcher stood down as prime minister. Quintessentially Tory? The only people I know that shop in M&S are past and present teaching colleagues plus family members. All of them vote Labour while a couple are staunch Corbynites. They'll be gutted to know that you think they're Tories.

Every supermarket does a caterpillar cake. Why suddenly is it worth suing over now and not before?

coopuk every time 😋

Hope nobody eats the one pictured after the kid smeared their sticky fingers all over it? 🤢

Country going to the dogs and we’re talking caterpillars?!?

This is a dumb slinky war.

Everybody is having butterflies over it 😂🤣
