Catalan separatist leaders given lengthy prison sentences

Nine Catalan separatist leaders have been cleared of violent rebellion over their roles in the failed bid for regional independence two years ago but found guilty of the lesser crimes of sedition and misuse of public funds.

What this news is not saying is that the sentence management of these people is now exclusive responsibility of the Catalan government, who is clearly devoted to independence. They can classify prisoners as third grade, and that way almost from the first day they all will be free

And the can is kicked down the road. How do they think this will 'heal the divide' in Catalan society?

This is unsettling. So much division in the world. Some wanting freedom from a larger power, some wanting to feel connected as part of a union. Differences of opinion that become heated wherever we are living but is the answer to close down debate and / or lock people away?

Separatist? Check your language Guardian, you make them sound like terrorists when all they want is autonomy for Catalonia.

You could use the terms independence leaders or even pro-democracy leaders. But, instead you use the term separatist leaders a derogatory and an incorrect term.

Separatist? Not independence? Try being neutral and objective and not using loaded, pejorative terminology.
