Injuries caused by turbulence are “extremely rare” and aviation remains one of the safest forms of travel, according to the UK Civil Aviation Authority .
Singapore’s Prime Minister has said there will be a “thorough investigation” and members of the country’s Transport Safety Investigation Bureau began to formally investigate the sudden turbulence that hit the flight on Tuesday. It is not yet known which type of turbulence the flight was dealing with.“In this last case, it is called clear-air turbulence, and it can be difficult to avoid because it doesn’t show up on the weather radar in the flight deck.
“Of course, there are times when a passenger will need to be without their seatbelt – for a visit to the lavatory, or obtaining something from the overhead locker above, but having a seatbelt gently fastened can protect you from injury should unexpected turbulence occur,” he added. Cabin crew are also required to sit down and fasten their seatbelts during turbulence, so could not patrol the aisles to check that passengers were adhering to the rules.
