The war veteran's version of You'll Never Walk Alone, which he recorded with Michael Ball, 57, and the NHS Voices of Care Choir, has made it to the top of the charts just in time for his 100th birthday on 30 April next week.
The record was previously held by Sir Tom Jones, 79, who reached number one with his song Islands In The Stream at age 68 back in 2006. While the race for first place appeared close, with The Weeknd, Drake and Dua Lipa threatening to win, The Weeknd singer Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, 30, backed Captain Tom in a tweet on Thursday 23 April.
Speaking from his home in Bedfordshire, he added: "I have to thank Michael Ball, the NHS Voices of Care Choir and everyone behind the scenes, who shared their talents and expertise in order to raise money for the NHS, to whom we owe so much.
