Coronavirus: Can we 3D-print our way out of the PPE shortage?

Sam Pashneh-Tala's team has crowdfunded more than £15,000 to make the face shields

There doesn't seem to be any official guidance for healthcare workers about the use of 3D-printed protective kit. Dr Pashneh-Tala is part of a team at the University of Sheffield called iForge that has so far made 600 face shields for healthcare workers using a combination of 3D-printed frames, visors made from laser cutting and elastic. In terms of materials each shield costs less than £1.80 - but a laser cutter can cost thousands."We put them through a cleaning process designed to deactivate Covid-19 specifically," he said.

PMAssocUK Not unless you can 3D print N95 masks

We have been very lucky here in Eastbourne as TechresortEB printed off masks for the clinicians at the surgery and more on the way if we need them They also loaned a laptop to one of our girls who needs to work from home. SupportTheNHS

We get supplies of various different visors sent to our ICU but some types sent are not fit for purpose. They fall apart as you put them on or (worse) they fall apart when in use. One type looks really robust but it mists up so you can’t see to do your work

3D printing is for making Prototypes. Not for Mass Production

We can use covid-19 to market d3 tech. To market Artificial Intelligence products sold to us by the 'one percent'.

Who knows. There are many production techniques. Someone in their bedroom printing masks won't help much.

There wouldn't be a shortage, if there were fewer people.

You fucked it up already. Considering 3d printing, vacuum cleaners, F1 spare parts and pissing in the wind to test covid 19 is not going to take you anywhere. Hiding death no. and reporting procedures ain't gonna make you look better. Clapping is not saving people. Truth will.

My god the fact people are turning this into a personal argument is ridiculous! Whether it be 3D injection moulding or importing does it really matter? It's just another excuse for conspiracy theorists etc to jump on the bandwagon.

PPE is more than a mask but BBCWorld desperate to back a corrupt murderous BorisJohnson

My school have been using a laser cutter, much quicker.

No, the government paying big factories that were made to do make them will get us out the PPE shortage. 3d printing can't match on volume/speed compared to injection moulding. Involves Mr Tory sticking his hands in his pocket and getting some cash out though.

Here is a quick solution from transparent sleeves.

Why are we even having to ?

Maske MaskeBulamazsam MaskeTak MaskeBedava

There isn't a shortage. Stop lying.

Government says there is no shortage! So, only if we can 3D print a competent government that isn't still following Herd Immunity

Perfection is the enemy of the good when it comes to emergency management (World Health Organisation). Thank goodness for these people printing what they hope will work better than nothing. What is the alternative exactly?

Can we? Narrative or news ?

Why don’t you the shit BBC donate the BBC license fee to help the NHS

No

No, to slow. Injection Molding would be the better way, a lot faster.

We already use the 3D-print devices to make PPE products. It’s so easy and useful.

If your asking the question Then the answer is yes

No

OFC! Here in Mendoza, Argentina, that is what we do.
