'It would be a travesty if they were to disincentivise people using public transport'

Campaigner delivered over 2,000 handwritten letters opposing the end of free over 60s travel passes in Northern Ireland to the Department for Infrastructure on Tuesday.

The Whitehead man added: “DfI policy includes a modal shifts from cars to public transport - instead they [proposing] taking people away and putting them on the roads.”She told us: “I do voluntary work and help my daughter with my granddaughter. “It would be very difficult for my daughter to get childcare because it’s so expensive, so if I can’t get to mind my little grandaughter - who is going to do that?

“And if they take it away they are undermining their policies on the environment and trying to bring down emissions because if people can’t have the bus pass, perhaps they will go back to the car and we don’t want that.”Former Derry & Strabane councillor, Maeve O’Neill, told us: “People are looking forward to their smartpass - they cherish it with everything they have.
