Calls have been made to remove statues across the UK that commemorate Britain’s slave trade history
Thousands of people have signed two new petitions calling for the statue to be removed after the Colston memorial was pulled down and thrown into Bristol Harbour on Sunday. Femi Nylander, one of the original campaigners, said the university made ‘a series of promises’ to black students around the curriculum and access and representation following the movement in 2015 but these ‘never materialised’ and the statue was not removed.A petition has been launched calling for removal of two statues of slave trader Sir Francis Drake in Devon in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.
‘The focus of these lessons should be: John Hawkins and his cousin Francis Drake were England’s first slave traders. In 1562 they sailed from The Barbican in Plymouth with three ships and violently kidnapped about 400 Africans in Guinea, later trading them in the West Indies. Penrhyn Castle and Garden in North Wales was once owned by Richard Pennant who enslaved 1000 people on plantations in Jamaica
Picton’s statue commemorates his part in the Napoleonic Wars but Councillor Thomas said ‘the growing awareness and understanding of the brutal nature of his governorship of Trinidad and his involvement in slavery makes it, in my view, very difficult to reconcile his presence in City Hall’. The 1st Viscount Melville worked to frustrate efforts to end the slave trade by using his influence as home secretary, setting the move back 15 years.
Dundas put forward an amendment to a Bill which would abolish slavery in 1792, opting for a more gradualist approach. This allowed the practice to continue for 15 years longer than it otherwise would have done.
Note that the statues are all of men too. Not only was racism rife but sexism was rife too.
Just take them down then they won't be damaged and no one can complain.

They can remove everything to do with slavery but it is history and it will not alter that!

I’m in full support of the movement but this stuff is the least of our problems . Better schooling option in majority black areas , fair job opportunities, representation in the government, and investment into to community is what should be the main focus !
Does “‘According to slavers’ accounts of the time this would probably have involved the death of three times that number.’” sound very similar to the number of Coronavirus deaths in 2020 or is it just me?
