Health leaders welcome the money but say it only goes so far and staff shortages need to be fixed.

That money is to be raised through tax increases - the rise in National Insurance and, from 2022, the Health and Social Care Levy - and will be spent on resources such as staffing. Some of the £5.9bn - £2.3bn - will be used to fund a big expansion of diagnostic tests, for example through more CT, MRI and ultrasound scans, the government said.which the government had already announcedThese centres will help clear the backlog of tests by the end of this Parliament, the government said.

"This is a game-changing investment in the NHS to make sure we have the right buildings, equipment and systems to get patients the help they need and make sure the NHS is fit for the future," said Mr Sunak. And the pressures on the NHS - being seen right across the UK, in mental health services, community care and A&E departments - show no sign of easing.

Those working in the healthcare sector said they were grateful for the money - but many said it was not enough to keep up with costs and demand.

How much is new money? Very little I suspect.

More bollocks from the BBC. This will go to private providers and into the pockets of shareholders. Tories do not invest in the NHS, they hate it with a passion

Many staff are dying on their arse, with the huge number of vacancies and high turnover of staff, staffing issues needs to be addressed first if you have any chance of dealing with the backlog in a timely manner.

It's just to look good torys want NHS gone.

So what is SG doing?

You are indeed a great woman to be called, I assure you that I will bring friends to come and invest with you because of your excellent work you did for me. I will keep sharing the good news about you Evelynclark777

Sticking to their “plan A” adds to the backlog. Putting more money in whilst adding to the problem makes no sense.

Presumably some fo this can be raised by increasing fines for water companies dumping raw sewage into our rivers and harbour s? Sewage StoolBritannia

miJemima Are they manufacturing extra doctors as well?

We need to see sustained capacity growth but also growth within community based services plus residential/nursing care settings to aid quicker, but safe, discharges from hospitals to more appropriate settings for the patient. RishiSunak sajidjavid BorisJohnson Keir_Starmer …

This won't be new money. WARNING: Propaganda written by British Broadcasting Conservatives

Surely there should be no spend at all aka blown the budget due to the pandemic, so no spending this year and try and reduce the debt. How are they pledging all this money by borrowing more money and hiking taxes up on everything making the poor poorer - seems a bit nuts to me 🤷‍♀️

Money alone won’t solve this problem. Where are the staff coming from?

And is that meant to make a difference to over 10 yrs of underfunding. It's another token Elastoplast

This is to coax the medics in the NHS out of hiding right?

Not sure the word 'pledged ' gives me much confidence 🤔

Is it actually extra or are they repackaging and re-announcing?

one off payments don't fix a decade of systemic strangulation.
