And Spain is set to get a reprieve and remain on the amber list after fears it could go red over an outbreak of the Beta variant.Mr Shapps is poised to announce a simplification of the traffic light system after to help confused holidaymakers.

The transport secretary had to U-turn on plans to create an "amber watchlist" after an outcry from business chiefs and MPs., leaving all arrivals facing mandatory hotel quarantine. And he will also scrap "amber plus", of which France is the only member, of countries from which even the double-jabbed must self-isolate on return.

There have been reports that Mr Shapps could also ditch the "green watchlist" of nations that could be turned amber to make the system less confusing. Travel expert Paul Charles said the latest data supports adding 16 new destinations to the green list.
