In her first public statement, Britney claims the conservatorship is 'abusive' and that she has been forced on to contraception

Ever since Britney Spears became a global star on the release of her smash hit, generation-defining hit Baby One More Time, it has felt like she was a commodity, ogled by teen boys and, creepily, adult males, idolised by tween disciples, hounded by press. Her song, Piece Of Me, pilloried this concept, that Britney could possibly be beholden in some way to someone she didn't know.

Speaking at Los Angeles Superior Court, she claimed the arrangement - her father was granted control of her affairs in 2008 - is 'abusive'. She said that she would like to settle and marry her boyfriend Sam Asghari, but that she is not able to, and that she has been denied the right to have more children as she has IUD fitted. She also claimed that she was put on the psychiatric drug lithium against her wishes.

'Three days later, after I said no to Vegas, my therapist sat me down in a room and said he had a million phone calls about how I was not cooperating in rehearsals, and I haven't been taking my medication. All this was false. He immediately, the next day, put me on lithium out of nowhere. He took me off my normal meds I've been on for five years. And lithium is a very, very strong and completely different medication compared to what I was used to.

'The last time I spoke to you by just keeping the conservatorship going, and also keeping my dad in the loop, made me feel like I was dead — like I didn't matter, like nothing had been done to me, like you thought I was lying or something. I'm telling you again, because I'm not lying. I want to feel heard. And I'm telling you this again, so maybe you can understand the depth and the degree and the damage that they did to me back then.
