British coastguard cut contact with UK lifeboat as it rescued migrants over ‘political fallout’

, with officials saying they took action after concerns were raised by Italian authorities over the boat’s certification.has now obtained the logs from that night which shows how HM Coastguard responded after the skipper of theissued an alert saying the lifeboat was speeding to the scene of a potential disaster as the vessel was filling with water.

In an updated message, the log then shows the planned strategy that was to be put in place while the rescue was still under way. As the lifeboat tried to find a safe port for the rescued migrants, it said one man had a suspected broken ankle and several casualties were suffering from exhaustion, dehydration and sea sickness.

A spokeswoman for the MCA said: “We refute any suggestion that we do not care about those who need rescuing. Her Majesty’s Coastguard is committed to the preservation of life above all else. The Aurora was issued with a prohibition notice by the MCA two days after the rescue, preventing it from returning to sea to carry out more rescues.
