Ben Wallace's attempt to become Nato chief represents a passport to top tables, from Washington to Kyiv, and influence in Paris and Berlin which has eluded the UK since the Brexit vote in 2016 ✒️ annemcelvoy for ipaperviews

Imagine the defence and security equivalent of the Eurovision Song Contest, with countries from the Baltic states, Western Europe and the newcomers of the old eastern bloc jockeying for alliances and unofficial “votes” – with a deciding one going to the White House via the Pentagon.

It also brings the chance to play a more significant role in aligning Nato priorities as the recklessness of Russian attacks in Ukraine intensify. The assault on thethis week was a sign that Moscow is prepared to target critical infrastructure with vanishingly little interest in potential loss of life or environmental consequences.

Wallace – bullish, direct, a Remainer, who stayed out of the internal bloodbath of the Tories’ leadership races – is the “secret sauce” of the party at a time when its talent banquet looks skimpy. He comes to the frayTurning that asset – and the strong card of Britain’s military support – into a winning campaign, however, means boot-strapping Britain off the “naughty step” of post-Brexit freeze meted out in Europe.

This was also a reminder to his immediate audience and the wider one steering the call on the Nato job that, while many other politicians of heft vie to be the figurehead of the western defence alliance, not many have seen active service, in his case in Northern Ireland, where he oversaw an operation to arrest an IRA terror unit about to detonate a bomb attack.
