Hong Kongers still cherish their links to Britain; Beijing may not like that but it will tolerate such nostalgia if bilateral relations are in good repair. Britain’s economic interests in Hong Kong are not insubstantial.
Ending dependence on your enemy might be considered a good thing.
Now more than ever each country need each other to keep economy going. Covid is not really over yet. We have to be careful.

Britain gets a lot of contempt and disgust in its former colonies, especially now that the truth of their depravities are coming out, thanks to the internet. Successive governments in these colonies were literally suppressing the information for decades after independence.
