“Britain gets more respect from China and the Commonwealth by acting independently” of America and the West, writes Singapore’s former foreign minister in a guest essay

visited my old college in Cambridge for a special lunch. The college looked better than ever. But when I asked afterwards how to travel to Great Yarmouth, where my son was interning as a junior doctor, few could help me. Great Yarmouth is only 118km away but getting there requires a slow, rickety train ride. There was hardly a foreigner in the seaside town, though the inhabitants were friendly to me.

When the British people voted in favour of Brexit in 2016, my heart leapt for them. I was familiar with the economic arguments against Brexit and aware that they would have to pay a heavy price. There is, however, a free-spiritedness in the British people which was never fully at ease in Europe. For centuries, British foreign policy was to prevent any power on the continent from becoming too dominant.

Britain also needs to take a long view of its relationship with China. The return of Hong Kong to China in 1997 was unavoidable but painful; China’s introduction of the National Security Law in 2020 even more so; but life goes on and Hong Kong will remain important to Britain. Hong Kongers still cherish their links to Britain; Beijing may not like that but it will tolerate such nostalgia if bilateral relations are in good repair. Britain’s economic interests in Hong Kong are not insubstantial.

Ending dependence on your enemy might be considered a good thing.

Now more than ever each country need each other to keep economy going. Covid is not really over yet. We have to be careful.

Excuse me....Does India need China...Nope...Does UK need India...Yup...Does India need UK...Yup..Math adds up...WTF cares about China😎They are still running Scared of Covid...And the World's moving fine isn't it😊

Yeo is more and more like a wumao! The CCP's behaviour in the Taiwan Straits is extremely dangerious to world trade and the IT industry, especially so for sea powers such as Japan, the US and UK. It shows that the CCP is the most dangerous threat to the world beside Russia.

No it does not they should become democratic 😡😡😡

Yeo, certainly may not have the long term growth story correct on this one.

No. We can tell that his bank accounts are full of wire transfers from PBOC. Get outta here.

You can always rely on Singapore to whine and dine for their sugar daddy China. Spineless vassal states are still in vogue for Singapore.

As I was harrassly perplexed today, I come to figure say no one loves you for don make am. But I’m pseudouphyously embarrassed and attriculatid I’m not even supposed to ramphorcely say this other than go and watch my videos like and comment because omo

Britain shouldn't had left the EU. Expecting to become a global influencing power with 70 millions people is impossible. The US with 300, China with 3.000 as India, EU with 300 will have more weight, production capacity ans leverage to establish ties. Instead, UK must ally.

there are lots of friends it can make in east asia besides beijing. it applies as well to fr and de. i see fr nimble these days.

LOL, what planet is this George Yeo on China has chosen a path hostile to the West. Western leaders were once wooed by China (me included) ever since WTO admission, thinking that China would become a responsible player. No one falls for that act any more.

Not a bad read.

Yeah make new ties with your old British masters who took a good advantage of you

Singaporean banks have a lot of dirty money from Burma, just ask the son of this infamous Chinese opium warlord LoHsinghan ;-)

No compromise on human rights & democratic principles. Britain won't throw away its integrity to ally with tyranny for short term gain, as this article suggests. The issue is not America (and Britain gains far more from America than China anyways). Rather China must change.

Britain gets a lot of contempt and disgust in its former colonies, especially now that the truth of their depravities are coming out, thanks to the internet. Successive governments in these colonies were literally suppressing the information for decades after independence.
