As we wait for the EU to decide on a Brexit delay, the national mood has turned poisonous, writes Guardian columnist Polly Toynbee

The mood has turned nastier since I first visited the Big Help Project food bank in Knowsley, Merseyside, two years ago. Back then, the Brexit poison hadn’t seeped so deep. But now, when the call goes out for food donations to feed its 10,000 clients, things have changed, says Peter Mitchell, the project leader. “I get people asking, ‘Is this food for British people?’ I never used to hear that, never. It’s hideous, it makes my blood boil.

Ever pollytoynbee? Because you're really awfully old and Britain is no stranger to being periodically extremely grim.

It's being so cheerful ....

The Guardian has run no articles explaining the EU, how it works, costs and grows. All have been anti leaving and ranging from barely litterate to raving bigoted diatribes against Britain. No mention that its intended destination is a federal United States of Europe,

And there's the airplane passengers who made a fuss for their selfies posted on social media of them stopping deportation of a multi-rapist, sentenced to be deported after completing a prison term. His victim is pretty grim about that Polly, do you care?

Tell you how dim. People stating they will refuse to buy any British food or goods because they threw a hissy fit over some having a Union Jack on the packaging in a supermarket and the manager thought they were joking, or silly and unpatriotic.

I love it when those responsible for stirring hatred & despair with constant overblown articles full of hysterical hyperbole, then complain about the toxic atmosphere they helped create! Well done Guardian and the ever dim Toynbee, you have nothing to lose but your privilege.

Mozambique people may disagree with you.

Its got to be grim when working families have to rely on food banks.

Germany too.

It’s only grim ‘oup North’!

This is no time for a compromise with Brexiters: there is no middle way | Polly ToynbeeA customs union is no better than a hard Brexit, and it’s a delusion that peace will break out if MPs are lured into the trap, says Guardian columnist Polly Toynbee Why on earth should there be any compromise? Democracy is what holds our society together. Anything other then leave would be devastation. This is madness I agree, no middle way, no deal is only option left. But Brexit means Brexit! Both major parties stood in 2017 on delivering Brexit. They should do that first then GE, PV about type of relationship, with or without CU, etc. Politics is about compromise and then majority decisions. The rest is dictatorship and conflict. No winners.
