Tesco stockpiling food in case of no-deal Brexit

Britain's biggest supermarket Tesco says it is stockpiling food ahead of a potential no-deal Brexit.

He told the Bloomberg news agency Tesco was stockpiling non-fresh food as it prepares for "the worst-case scenario".with the European Commission President on Wednesday. "We are trying to ensure that we have stockpiled as much as we can of non-live product either in our own warehouses or with our suppliers," Mr Allan said.

All this will result in is panic buying again and we don’t need this!!

As ever the country is divided. Whether you’re in favour or against Brexit, there’s no denying it has created huge division, even within families. What will be will be. So what 3 things do you predict will happen next year? Gridlock. Blockades. Chaos.

I’d like to remind my constituents that there is no need to panic. Having spoken to the government’s Behavioural Insights Team, I can confirm that the ‘worst-case scenario’ document was originally titled base-scenario - which I’m sure we can all agree sounds much more reassuring!

👍

Don’t be stupid.

Prices on fresh food doesn't normally have import duty. The only real change in cost is some paperwork and a queue at customs.

Presuming this is just project fear? Not sure what the point of project fear would be any more as we plummet over a cliff in a burning routemaster, but I’m guessing a fair few responses will be harking on about it..

FfS do they put this kind of news out just to force people into stockpiling loo roll again?!

that’s d reason why it is important fr a country to achieve food sovereignty. it cushion any shocks esp protectionist measures by d exporting countries that wud disrupt food availability as well as accessibility. over-dependency on limited sources hs a grave repercussions

That’s so they can make more money when they put the prices up

Obvious short term (hopefully) outcome of no deal. Supermarkets should be taking such action as a matter of course to maintain supply's, not shouting it from the roof tops.

2020: The year the BBC discovered the ‘worst case scenario’.

Short dated no doubt don’t they make enough out of us wish they would stop the scaremongering

I think the people of Britain forget they live on a tiny island in the North Atlantic.

Not so much news as 'cue panic buying'.

I love that everyone already demonises the supermarkets for future price raises but never even once could imagine that being an island with limited farming has anything to do with it

Way to shit the sheep up media. Nothing to see here just put your face nappies back on.

It’s not worst case it’s what’s going to happen 🤷🏼‍♀️

And yet Tampons haven’t been discounted... I’m having to use tea towels to stop the flow.. 1st world country? My arse!

We've past the scaremongering phase, so you can just fvck off with this BS. Thanks.

Has it been advised to?

Waaaaay ahead of them. But even then I’m not sure how they can stockpile anything fresh that’s imported? Hope no one wants grapes, bananas or pineapple for the foreseeable future...

European banks are in serious trouble and could completely fail...Shhh

When experts warned of this it was 'remoaner scaremongering' Unfortunately now it's just a reality.

Another brexit bunch Project Fear turned into a Project Fact.

Such a wishy-washy report using language such as: 'could' (so it probably won't) 'up to' (so that includes 0.00%) Just more scaremongering from the ultra-remain BBC.

The intention is food rationing despite Brexit.

Blatant pro-Conservative bias from bbclaurak here:

Christ sake , now you have said this the idiots will all go out and buy extra of everything so say goodbye to the loo rolls again ,

No wonder my warehouse is cramped

Well I hope they bring in some sort of system to stop idiots panic buying.

I'd prefer if they sourced elsewhere? Or are EU countries only capable of producing food. Fail to plan, plan to fail. I bet aldi and lidl manage

The headline should read as 'companies order in products to keep up with projected demand.' Nothing new...

They will probably put the price up anyway and just use it as an excuse

I will not be buying anything French there is nothing they have I can't live without.

Oh this really helps with the 'Please don't panic buy' message. here we go again, the idiots buying stuff they neither need or use will be out in force now.

Which will last 48 hours.... So by 4th January

Hope McDonald’s are stockpiling burgers or we won’t be able to exist! People will be rushing out to buy frozen Brussels sprouts in their droves because of this fear factor rubbish! 🤣🤣🤣

'We hold all the cards!'

So happy I emigrated to Australia long before this shitshow kicked off. Sad for those I left behind, though.

More scaremongering...

So it will be goodbye Fromage Hallo British Cheese who would pay a 40% tariff their champagne and wine will take a hit as well.

bbcnews BBCPapers

Are they stockpiling their cooked chicken from Thailand? Whatever happened to buying British Tesco wednesdaythought

Good for Tesco..

people running Tesco should've been at No.10.

BBCPolitics

BBCPolitics Wasn't that the same picture on your piece about people buying for a good Christmas?..just saying....

Just heard the Tesco chairman on bbc radio 4 and this is untrue.

What a crock of 💩

The brexiters still think that no-deal is a great opportunity. They'll tell you that they definitely voted for food shortages.

Tesco are preparing because they will have an excuse for price rises in the new year and want to capitalise on it

‘We’ were all supposed to benefit from a ‘leave the EU’, with a transition that would be hardly noticed. Seems as if it’s (further) doom and gloom to come. Well done ‘everyone’ !

I’d love to see the positives of leaving the EU reported at the same time so people can try and make some sort of balanced opinion. Doom and gloom constantly

All the supermarkets have been doing this for sometime This is not a scare tactic. It is a prudent thing to do.

As a small independent opticians we have been for the last 6 months stocking up for the inevitable shit show that’s coming.

PrOjEcT fEaR

BBCPolitics Must be careful not to panic the public unnecessarily. All those writing these stories and reports should keep to the facts which do not suggest problems with food supplies.

BBCPolitics So my 10p beans will rise to... 10.5p?

Stockpile all Tesco likes but it won't last that long if the worse happens.

They are too optimistic, the rise in prices will reach 50%! Brits will pay for voting blind and for their politicians stupidity!

It will go out of date. Next you'll be reporting on Tesco bining lots of food. 🙄😁

So that will last for a month or so. Then what?

My brexit prediction is No Deal, Johnson will throw out crap to the believers about our Sovereignty trumping any trade deal, his backers can then short the £UK in the new year making him/them very rich following that Johnson will agree a deal as no one does business without one

Let’s raise a glass to the losers for stopping brexit , we could have been out and dealing with it 5 yrs ago

BBCScotlandNews BBC in trying to cause panic Buying shock

It’s Christmas! We all stockpile at Christmas.

Wish they'd deliver a bit quicker, the arseholes. 3 day wait!

Many companies/businesses/shops etc are doing this the pallet/parcel networks I worked for are busy and prepared here and in Europe for whether things go tits up or not....😬🙏

The BBC have bad mouthed Brexit since day one. Never spoke of the positive always the negatives. This is hastened the end of the licence fee. Be on our your country’s side for once not the EU gangsters. DefundTheBBC

Well more club card points at least

BuIIshit

They only have so much space though 'Businesses looking to stockpile food and drink ahead of January’s Brexit deadline are struggling to find available storage space, with warehouses across the country already at capacity.' Oct 2020

Quick grab the loo rolls they will be worth more than Bitcoin. The new currency Buttcoin.

Well this whole Brexit bollocks was a good idea.....🤦‍♂️

that's allright, you guys just will have to scrape the mould off the jam, right ?

Maybe you can absorb the costs and take less margin from your hard strapped customers ? Just an idea

Oh the panic buying begins! Bl..dy BBC you are so irresponsible!

Lmao more fear mongering. Stocks get used up, then what? They refill them 👏

Better go and get some bog roll, I guess. 🤔

And in a couple day's time you will be posting articles trying to shame the public for stockpiling items after you have instigated a panic-to-buy with these headlines. Everyone has known the consequences of no-deal for 5 years and yet here we are, multiple chances to stop it. 🤷‍♂️

Usual negativity by media i see

Oh my god. Pathetic

👉WELLS FARGO reported BUYING BITCOIN now is similar to the 1850's GOLD RUSH! 🙊And, in the MIDST of a BITCOIN SUPPLY SHORTAGE, Microstrategies INC is putting a $400 MILLION dollar purchase order together to buy MORE BITCOIN! They already have $475 million invested! 🔥BITCOIN!🔥
