Brexit isn't some imperial fantasy – it just means we want to be ourselves | timothy_stanley

I hear it said that Brexit Britain has lost its mission in foreign policy, that we’ve cut ourselves off from the continent, that Donald Trump is abusing us, and so we splash about in the Atlantic like a drowning bulldog. We have no clear purpose because we don’t know if we’re European or American, conservative or liberal, imperial or in retreat. And we’re nothing without a purpose, right?

Lugey6 timothy_stanley 👍🇬🇧

timothy_stanley I'm myself

Lugey6 timothy_stanley Remainers. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

timothy_stanley For many many many Brits, being European is part of being British.

timothy_stanley Funny how EU membership doesn’t seem to stop the French, Irish and Italians from “just being themselves?” Again it’s always “poor little Britain” whose national identity is so weak and its economy uniquely damaged by being in the EU

timothy_stanley brexit is a fascist construct and decent Brits abhor fascists. brexitparty_uk are neo Nazi apologists

Lugey6 timothy_stanley No, Britain 🇬🇧 is not a European country. Brexit has been the best thing for Europe. It has made all of us, the Europeans, aware of how thankful we should be for what we have. Wishing you islanders all best, but please leave now.

Lugey6 timothy_stanley What a stupid title. No wonder considering the source

timothy_stanley I love Europe. Germany is German France is French Italy is Italian. What’s wrong with that? It’s our differences that make it so wonderful.

timothy_stanley Well said!🇬🇧

timothy_stanley More bullshit from the Borograph

timothy_stanley God for f-ing-bid. You must stay in bloody line and like it.

Lugey6 timothy_stanley Strange how the French, Germans, Spanish and all the other EU nations can 'be themselves' but not English Brexitters.

timothy_stanley By “be ourselves” you mean ignore all evidence, intimidate people who look or sound foreign, repeal protections to our human rights and environment, insist that Germany is still the enemy, and funnel money to a few greedy lobbyists and hedge fund managers? Sounds great🙄🇪🇺

timothy_stanley Flipping heck! And they call us remainers snowflakes!

timothy_stanley We do to 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇪🇺🐰

timothy_stanley Yes, because being members of the EU means the Italian, French, Polish, Danish, Greek et cetera have all had their national identities subsumed by a homogenised European-ness. This bollocks article isn't worth my time.

timothy_stanley I vant to be alone!

timothy_stanley You mean right wing billionaires want to de ref UK like it’s High Empire time again and send workers down metaphorical mines 25 hours a day. Hyperbole but that is what the right wants.

timothy_stanley Says the Barclay bros on their way to that Ritz Hotel that they own. Wankers.

timothy_stanley Like a kid at youth club, standing in the corner, arms folded. If you don't get involved, you won't enjoy it!

timothy_stanley how are you going to be more yourself when you weaken yourself and not able to protect yourself? Pelosi has said no Deal Brexit means no US trade deal. Trump ties trade deal to Huawei policies. How is that being yourself when dictated to by others?

timothy_stanley Remainers

timothy_stanley Or rather we want to be alone. Unfortunately I don't like the idea of being alone terribly much.

timothy_stanley PRESS BARON RUBBISH.

timothy_stanley It is. We are ourselves. What have we ever been stopped from doing?

timothy_stanley I am myself now thanks, enjoying all the advantages of EU membership. What a ridiculous argument!

timothy_stanley If that is so, you could have done so while still in the Union!

timothy_stanley You cant get much more imperialist than the brexit being sold to punters. With its jingoistic spirit of the blitz rhetoric. As for allowing us to be ourselves? That's just about the weakest argument I have heard so for. Which is impressive in it's own right.

timothy_stanley Can’t read it as it’s paywalled, dunno how the EU has stopped the UKbeing itself

timothy_stanley So Spain can’t be Spain in the EU? Austria can’t be Austria in the EU? Italy can’t be Italy in the EU? Do you realise how ludicrous your position is? Little Englander syndrome at its pathetic worst.

timothy_stanley Oh, how sweet. And so unrealistic, improbable, and doomed.

timothy_stanley Brexit IS some imperial fantasy

timothy_stanley What are we going to do? Abolish baguettes? Pathetic!

timothy_stanley Given who you patently are, I would have thought you would seize on anything that could make you less “you”.

timothy_stanley Doh !

timothy_stanley How the hell does leaving the EU help?

timothy_stanley Jeez how is being in the EU stopping you 'being yourselves'?

timothy_stanley UK wants 'to be itself'! Let UK(?!) screw themselves! Brexit is doing it!

timothy_stanley You got that right....not just some puppet on a string being pulled by crooked Eurocrats

timothy_stanley Did Johnson write that? More idiotic claptrap from the Brexity supporting media. Why does the Telegraph support the destruction of the UK so much? Is it the owners wish? Gone are the days you reported for the interest of the country.

None of the comments to this suggest anyone has read the piece, just the headline. It's like reviewing a book based exclusively on its title: 'Pride and Prejudice? What is this, the 18th century? Get over yourself, you stuck up bigot.'

timothy_stanley I want to be myself in relation to others who are different.

timothy_stanley ...which is just as much of a fantasy.

timothy_stanley You’re welcome 😇

timothy_stanley Being ur self, a bigoted, racist homophobic country. If it wasn't 4 the EU, women wud still b wanting equal pay, ethnic minorities wud b demanding equal treatment, lgbt wud b demanding not 2b sacked 4 who they R. Jog on w/ ur crap.

timothy_stanley Er, no , it’s an imperial unrealistic fantasy !

timothy_stanley Does EU membership stop the French being French? The Dutch being Dutch? The Italians being Italian? No. What nonsense.

timothy_stanley So do remainers .. but now the minority (leave) is dictating to the majority (remain). Tails wags dog and Telegraph prints crap, two unsurprising statements in modern Britain.

timothy_stanley Newspaper owned by tax dodging billionaire says leaving the trading block that legislated against tax dodging won't let us be ourselves. Twats.

timothy_stanley Yeah, fat white and stupid.

timothy_stanley We are perfectly capable of being ourselves whilst in the EU - what stops us?

timothy_stanley When you say ‘we’ you mean England. dissolvetheunion 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

timothy_stanley This article is bum gravy. Embarrassing that the Telegraph has come to this: evidence free reporting, bleating about the past.

timothy_stanley And who are you at the moment ?

timothy_stanley Absolutely bollocks written by a tosspot published in a shitrag.

timothy_stanley Only the feeble feel threatened by pluralism.

timothy_stanley To those who responded to Mr Stanley (a majority of responses clearly on the side that Mr Stanley talking rubbish). Telegraph (incl. Sunday) only has 6.7% market share, so Mr Stanley appeal is to a minority. His views were 1 reason why I recently cancelled my subscription.

timothy_stanley Who were we when we hosted the 2012 Olympics? Happy days. We didn't know that wretched word 'Brexit'. And yes, it IS an 'imperial fantasy'. The Olympics proved there's NOTHING WHATSOEVER about being an EU member that stops us being ourselves. Stop insulting our intelligence.

timothy_stanley You’ve got to feel a bit sorry for people who’ll risk the break up of the UK, alienating our closest trading partners & trashing the economy just so they can ‘be themselves’.

timothy_stanley Flag waving doesn’t put food on the table.

timothy_stanley So are you suggesting that because they aren’t looking to leave the EU, the French aren’t French and the Germans aren’t German ? 🙄

timothy_stanley Not today thank you

timothy_stanley If by 'ourselves' you mean, 'gammony racist Little Englanders with rind for brains', you may have a point.

timothy_stanley To be ourselves at the expence of; being a toy in the hands of USA and maybe other big countries, economy to go down the tube, investments going to other countries. Well that's OK.. Let's just be ourselves... No money but, Happy.

timothy_stanley Yeah, but I don’t want to be you. I want to be me. Me the EU citizen with freedom of movement and the single market and shared values.

timothy_stanley I'm myself now. How will Brexit make me more 'myself'... What a bizarre, weak argument for wrecking the UK. PeoplesVote RevokeArticle50 StopBrexit 🇬🇧 🇪🇺

timothy_stanley Can you definie what 'being ourselves' is? Because I'm having an identity crisis and have been since 2016. Your words appear to be made up fantasy...are we now going to hear, 'I just want to be myself' as the reason for this colossal catastrophe. UK alone, being themselves

timothy_stanley Sick of this nationalist bullshit now.

timothy_stanley

timothy_stanley

timothy_stanley Like chasing futures contracts in impoverished and weak countries, with big guns during and after the looming economic correction, without EU human rights to hinder our Churchillian spirit?

timothy_stanley I’ve never stopped being myself. Utter claptrap once more from this appalling, xenophobic right-wing rag.

timothy_stanley We already are ourselves it’s just that some of us aren’t the ourselves we imagine we used to be.

timothy_stanley Even as a publication, named after an obsolete technology; you still remain out if touch with reality.

timothy_stanley Well who have you been up to this point then ffs?

timothy_stanley No Brexit isn’t some imperial fantasy. It’s a moronic confidence trick that can only lead to tears & humiliation for Brexiteers. Here’s how:

timothy_stanley

timothy_stanley

timothy_stanley

timothy_stanley Pretty sure Germans don’t feel like Italians or French. Brexit is an imperial fantasy and one that has real world negative consequences, much like the British Empire was massively negative for the rest of the world.

timothy_stanley Why all the illegalities in the Ref then? Brexit is such a good idea you had to lie and cheat to get your way.

timothy_stanley We won't be 'ourselves' we'll have to be America's obedient little poodle... obviously.

timothy_stanley When did we stop being ourselves? Things move on and we can’t be stuck in the 1950s forever. We are connected to the continent by the channel tunnel and better communications than ever before. The world is a smaller place.

timothy_stanley

timothy_stanley Ur right. Shame that so may replies at totally money oriented. Just shows how base we have been dragged. No spirit, no values just money

timothy_stanley Bankrupt in all respects isolationism shines through this failing make-up of false 'indepent' pseudo-journalism. Sponsored by Russian/Chinese money fraud of a referendum leave campaign will result in UK being the only country in history with self-imposed broad spectrum sanctions!

timothy_stanley That itself is a fantasy of british kind ...

timothy_stanley

timothy_stanley Brexit was a fraud 'won' by cheating & criminals.

timothy_stanley Most of my Brit friends want out too. Sick of the Brussels gravy train.

timothy_stanley It’s perfectly possible to have a sense of national identity while still having strong ties, access and zero tariff trade with the rest of Europe! Only insecure little Englanders would think otherwise.

timothy_stanley And want everyone else to be yourself too. Jog on, pal.

timothy_stanley More imperialistic BS from a bunch of clowns pretending to be impartial journalists

timothy_stanley No it doesn't, it's the result of a load of bigoted arseholes being lied to by a more educated load of bigoted arseholes and in that sense, it IS an imperial fantasy. It's rubbish, it's not good for the UK and I hope those who voted for it lose their jobs, that would be funny.

timothy_stanley It just means you want to keep our offshore tax havens open so our elites can continue to rob our society.

timothy_stanley So everyone born after the UK joined the EU has never been themselves? Or did you just vote for a fantasy version of the 50s, because everything was simple when you were a child?

timothy_stanley Better out before the ship sinks.

timothy_stanley It just means what Russia wants you to believe. We got snookered too. Maybe one day we can get together and hand them their ass.

timothy_stanley I didn't need a referendum to know who I was.

timothy_stanley Funnily enough I’ve never felt that I wasn’t myself.
