Shoppers buying items from Europe now have to pay customs or VAT charges

"I had no idea at all I was going to be charged any more for deliveries after Brexit. The extra costs were definitely a bit of a shock."

On top of that, the UPS courier for the second parcel showed up at her door several days later, asking for an extra payment of £82 for her £200 coat. But Ellie was one of the shoppers caught unaware of the fact that those rules have changed since the UK's official exit. For goods costing more than £135, customs duties may also apply, which can range from 0% to 25% of the product you're buying if they have not been paid by the sender already.

BorisJohnson michaelgove Why is there no mention of these charges at 'check, change, go' and you refused to answer when asked about them in parliament last year?

Anyone who had ever ordered stuff from outside the EU knew this was coming years ago. I think it was mentioned in the media a few times as well but it's difficult to communicate with people who stick their fingers in their ears and chant Project Fear to every fair warning.

It's called the RacismTax. BrexitReality

But hey, blue passports!

As manufacturer, and one person business, I would not read details, but would send my products to every administration area in UK, to check easiest entry, market research. In EU are special tax free zones, I guess in UK also. Some go into assembly in UK from foreign parts.

The brexit gift that keeps on giving.

🤷🏻‍♂️say thanks to your 🤡and his voters !

Buy British 🇬🇧👍🥂

Surprised she needs a coat in the sunlit uplands BrexitReality

You had one job. To report the truth.

104th time this year 😀

Gonna have to be careful when ordering online

Why not buy from a British company?

bbcBola Consequences matters. And there sur both positives and négatives to every decision.

Yup!!!! Funny how that works.

matoxley What is so special about your coat that you have to buy it out of Europe? And is your aim to hopefully evade the sales tax put there to level the playing field of competitiveness with your own countries supply base. ?

BeaumontBee

“We anticipate this will bring in an extra £300m a year.” So not even as much as one week of that £350m NHS Brexit boon they promised? Lol. But it’s ok, UK consumers can wear, drive, eat or sit on sovereignty instead.

You helped Brexit happen! Own it!

Customs *and* VAT and Handling.

Where’s the story in this, yet again BBC lazy reporting.

If only we had a public broadcast news channel during the referendum campaign that could have reported facts like the very high likelihood of customs and VAT charges on goods if we left the single market and customs union. Unfortunately for us all we had the BBC instead.

Will you be posting an alternative view in a name of 'balance'?

Thanks to this clown who also wanted Trump to receive the Nobel peace prize 😂😂👍😂 (Here mixing herd-immunity potions he sells to NHS via a shell company in Cayman Island)

And? What were you expecting?

birdonthewire3 You seem surprised.

Stop moaning. You got your sovereignty back. Easily worth £82 each time you buy a coat from ANY of our European neighbours 😁😁😁😁👍👍👍👍

Are you allowed to claim it back on departure

Read the fine print! More surprises to come!

greg_jenner I'm just permanently baffled as to how this is actually news to anyone, or indeed a surprise.

Well, yes

Thats what happens when your outside the single market and don't have a proper trade deal. Why haven't the biggest media outlets here in the UK been doing more to inform the people this is how it would be smh

Apocalypse stuff isn’t it...

BBC NEWS you will be more informed by reading the dandy or the beno

Finally reporting the facts. Better late than never! Except it’s too late!

Very remiss of you to fail to report to viewers this would happen. You are after all the British Broadcasting Corporation! You failed an entire nation.

Buy local.

Another Brexit bonus

I don’t remember this on the side of the bus!

And this comes as a surprise?

Some of us were trying to open people's eyes to this being a possibility years ago, but got shouted down, called traitors & liars, and faced abuse for 'not believing' in Brexit. Well. Don't say we didn't try to warn you. Brexit:WeToldYouSo

😜brexit is and always was total bullsh*t😜

splbanter So an Italian jacket on oxford street will cost £282 instead of £200. Is that right? How will duty free work then.

Buy a coat from the uk then. Help our own economy and not the corrupt European Union 🇪🇺

What a shocker. You knew this before. You knew this was a huge probability all through the last four years of hell. And now you're reporting it like it's a surprise. Absolute shame on you

dontbrexitfixit This isn’t news , it would have been 4 years ago

Typical anti–brexit BBC! Where’s the unchallenged statement from a brexiter tory MP for ‘balance’? Where’s Gove or some other liar assuring us this is ‘frictionless’ trade? You must show both sides — even if one side is complete bol**cks!

Oops. Brexit sucks doesn’t it.

no shit

Gee, if only someone - anyone - could have somehow predicted this in some way and, I don’t know, warned us somehow before the referendum?.... ProjectStarkReality

Tired of all that winning, pro-Brexit crowd?

Duh. Maybe this should've been a story some years ago. Say 5 years ago?

LucyFWilson Toto, I've got a feeling we're not in Europe any more.

Shame you didn’t report that before referendum!!

Moral of the story - don’t buy from Europe. You don’t have to 👌

RemainWereRight Imagine going from being in the Customs Union and having the FourFreeedoms to being an outside third party and thinking that was a good thing I paid £70 import on the £20 shipping and £50 of a toy, my car is in the garage waiting for a part

Oh dear. Looks like the cost of shopping is going to increase unless you want to buy goods produced locally. We could start making our own clothes again like in the 50s I guess. Chin up everyone.

Hope you didn't vote for Brexit - if you did, I have no sympathy for you.

This is the thing about bargains, you have to be mindful. Just like buying goods from the states. It's normally still cheap even with duty/vat factored in.

MacL0ve Now ye know how we felt about the draconian £-€ exchange rates employed by UK companies in Ireland.

Nooooooooo!!!!? Really?!!!?

projectreality

Wow who would have guessed

SamMaui

You're only a few weeks, actually scratch that, a few years too late!

Next .

Go to

So don’t buy EU goods, it’s a big wide world out there. Simples

yo leavers, you asked for this

Buy in the uk simple

pontyinparis Fucking DOH!!! Were you reporting on this when Remainers were screaming for you to make the consequences of Brexit known BEFORE they hit?

So what was the point of “getting a deal”? When is free trade actually free?

Surprise, surprise.

This may not be all bad. Consumerism

The economic illiteracy being displayed below is exactly why this mess is unfolding this way. My favourite: we can make coats here now!

Buy British then

Britain is FUCKED thanks to Brexit wankers... 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Well Brexiters voted for this, didnt they do their research like the Remainers, who knew this would happen.

200 quid for a coat 😳😳, I got a good one from TK Maxx... spot on for 50 quid 👌👌

Hahaha. Gammons in the comments “buy British” Mate, if she wanted a coat made from straw, string & crushed racist dreams then “British” is what she would have bought. I don’t really think anyone wants that shite though. The world should be our oyster - not an 18th century village

Well of course you would. Thought people who voted to leave would have known that. If you brought anything from a non EU country VAT and customs duty was added my

Taking back control......

And it works both ways. We are not going to be ordering from UK company's anytime soon.

We must all back Britain. Buy from a uk firm.

Oh, I thought everything would be cheap after Brexit.

Good. We need to start buying products from our independent shops after the pandemic

This was going to happen. You wanted Brexit No you have it. No more Booze Curises

Good! We need to support UK-based vendors.

milmolaman Had no idea? Is she having a laugh? Brexit was *always* going to result in extra charges as Brexiters voted to impose them.

Wow, that’s terrible!

I did think something had changed when purchasing on Amazon..

Dear Friends and Family in the UK: Hello and greetings from your American cousin. I have great news. You got Brexit. We got Trump. We would like to inform you that what has been done can, indeed, be undone.

MalcolmNance Oops! Well, you voted for it, you bought it.

BrexitDisaster brexitreality

splbanter Thank you England 🤦🏻‍♂️

splbanter

Blue passports though

I bought my wife a coat from an Italian website and had to pay £76 in import duty and VAT. I expected it and didn't consider it an 'extra' cost because I'm not an imbecile

EU residents buying from the UK have to pay both. They left that bit out. And EU retailers who sell TO Britain must individually register with UK govt for VAT, then collect & pay it themselves. But a lot of hauliers won't go there anyway now. Just hafta buy in Europe, I guess.

PhippsDavis This was obviously going to happen

Brexit means Brexit 😆 🤣

Buy from your own Country, You Fool.

Contrary to what seem to think, this is not a phenomenon, it’s a consequence.

ChristineCair15 But good old British Hessian sacks and cut out the holes, just like in the good old days. Good enough for Boudicca. And while you’re at it some lovely British plasters to allow for nipple rub.

The coat in a British shop would have included vat and obviously the shop would have calculated delivery. So dearer. Imported was cheaper then vat , delivery added by our customs and excise. The same, nothing has altered! Fuss about nothing

Just wear your sovereignty

lukewilson91 not the only one. Grim!

£200 on a coat? If you're paying that for a coat you can probably afford the extra £82

Maybe support Britain.. there are some fab coats you can purchase and no extras..

Well done brexit britnuts hope yous chock on it,sympathy’s for those that never voted for it

There’s reasons scotlands didn’t vote brexit 1-we didn’t fall for BBC & MSM lies 2-we didn’t fall for Tory lies 4-did our research 5-weren’t driven by a racist brexit ideology 6- we don’t do the “we don’t like the French, the Germans, the Spanish, the EU,the immigrants...

My daughter (living in Getmany) bought stuff online and had them delivered to my address. Today I sent the parcel to her. It weighed 10kg and the goods were insured for up to £600. Total cost to ship was £42. Prebrexit the costs were £24. BrexitDisaster

Brexit: the gift that keeps on giving.

Love how so many people are saying 'Buy British then' as a reply! The problem with that is most of our food, clothes, tech, vehicles etc. are all manufactured outside the UK. Its unavoidable. BrexitShambles Brexit UK EU

No shit!

Oh no, what about gammons ordering their track suits from Europe? Shouldn't gloat, shouldn't gloat.

The same as if you buy from any other country in the world we aren't in a trading block with. Not news it's reality

Jeez. People out there buy £200 coats?!

Welcome to life after Brexit! For many years I favoured buying goods not available in the UK from the EU due to no taxes but it looks like its the same as rest of the world now. ☹️ BrexitChaos BrexitShambles BrexitMess Brexit UK EU

What did you expect? This is what Leavers voted for.

Does everyone remember being told we had a free trade agreement?

Project Dear!

You can get a coat in Oxfam for a tenner. Only an idiot would spend three figures on one item of clothing.

Shoppers buying items from all over non-EU Europe already had to do this. With Brexit the UK decided to impose those same rules on all EU27 countries. We are a third nation now. It’s not a surprise.

No, it's Customs duties AND import VAT, and often a £12.00 handling charge if the item is delivered by Royal Mail or ParcelForce. I know you're no longer allowed to point out the government's lies, but you could at least report the facts.

katiec1314 WTF did you think was going to happen...?

thick as mince

Have been doing that when buying from the USA! These charges are exorbitant! Now, we're being shafted by the EU! Scandalous!

I was charged customs fees for a US order. Royal Mail were t allowed to drliver until I paid online (it was genuine, not the scam that some are talking about on Twitter at mo) I can therefore believe this, if no satisfactory trade deal has been agreed on.

UK makes some good quality clothing.

We’ll have to buy British then. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Well... that was to be expected. But if you ignore the small print....🤷‍♀️

So what , just do the same back.

Eh yes! They still don’t get it do they- buy British support British give more entrepreneurs support to restore our manufacturing industry which was destroyed by Europe

Yes, this is one of the many negative consequences of Brexit. However the Conservatives BBCPolitics bbclaurak chose not to tell people...and here we are.

Question for the BuyBritish gang, where can I find british bananas? I’ve been looking for them for a while but they always comes from communist countries in Latin America...God forbid I end up eating those! Please help!

Dear pritipatel we thank and appreciate what you did for afg lefted behind interpreters for British forces we kindly request to include all interpreters, terminated, dismissed and blacklisted the small mistake should not cost their lives , we all are living in fear

But Blue Passports

5 yrs ago on BBCAnyQuestions you had an “entrepreneur” on your panel who moaned about all the paperwork he had to do for EU VAT regime. Argued Brexit would fix that for him. Get him back on and see if he still thinks this. Or whether moving that cost to customers loses them!

For a news organization, you seem shockingly uninformed on how not being in a customs union works.

I buy stuff from all over the world and have known about export fee. People should stop living in a cocoon!

Yeah, we did say *shrug*

TAKING BACK CONTROL

Buy Victoria Beckham, Stella Mccartney.. cough..

The comments on here 😂 Truly delusional Brexiteers who would try to justify practically anything rather than admit they were wrong even on just one single issue. Rule Britannia, our glorious future awaits 😂🤪

Don't worry ... Europe needs the UK far more than the UK needs Europe ... I saw it on the BBC ...

That's why I'm waiting pre winter sale here to buy from Mango (Spain), H&M (Sweden) and Zara (Spain), my swimwear of River Island was in discount in Ripley (Chile) though but the real price was the double. Welcome to my life..

UK Exporters will have the same issues to a market of 440m potential customers on our doorstep.

Gosh! Who'd have thought? Why did no one warn us all? 🙄

katiec1314 Could you perhaps hop in a time machine and do your job by informing the public of the actual implications of leaving the EU? You know, in 2016 when it mattered. Ta.

This is extremely one sided. The reverse applies too and small UK businesses are equally screwed. All of a sudden because of courier charges and import VAT charged in, say France, small exporters have seen their customers charged an extra 50%.

Well yes, as we’re outside the customs union, which you allowed think tanks to claim was a great idea on your channels for the past 6 years

She was clearly charged EU VAT, which shouldn't happen on exports out of the EU. VAT is charged on arrival in the UK. She should claim a refund from the supplier, as they charged her a tax that was not applicable.

Do they pay this in Canada? We have a Canadian deal right?

LIEING BORIS AND THE TORY PARTY FORGOT TO MENTION THIS BEFORE WE VOTED, LOOKS LIKE NO ONE WILL BE BETTER OFF, EVEN THE HAPPIER FISH WILL BE MORE EXPENSIVE!!

But British, problem solved

Brexit tax is a disgrace let’s rejoin

You should have explained this before the 2016 Brexit referendum.

I had to pay £60 on my own goods I shipping back to the UK whilst in the US. Robbing Customs.

Oh blessed be the brexiteers

JaneyGodley What are folk surprised, of course this happened 😑

Why does any of this come as a surprise ? This is normal when nations in different customs territories trade

I don’t really understand how people didn’t think this would happen before Brexit.... if you’re outside a certain market... you pay customs on it because tariffs are a thing 🤷🏼‍♂️

If only someone had foreseen this .... ..........

Did anyone think that wouldn’t be the case?

And why this is news now? Shouldn't this be made clear before the deal was signed?

'Sunny uplands' and all that!

Absolutely we need to plough back into our economy where we can.

JaneyGodley Well, well, well. If it isn’t the consequences of our actions. Thanks every single leave voter! PlayStupidGamesWinStupidPrizes

It's called leaving the EU. If only someone had told them

This is not a surprise. Some people did try to tell you this would happen.

I pity the woman who had 2 bowls of cornflakes and a hot dog over the past 10 days Newsnight

Rich b--ch asked to pay her way.. Oh NO!! quick call out the offense brigade.

That’s if they’ll send them at all

So what did zero tariffs and zero quotas in a trade deal mean (BJ thumbs up grinning)?

Wow, no one could have predicted this.

Without knowing the exact garment the imported customs charge to the best of my knowledge, would have been 12% VAT 20% (The latter always there) sounds like someone using Brexit to increase profit level.

Duh yes.

1st World problem🙄'I must, I must have it ... my life wouldn't be worth living without it' ‼️

If I buy a £200 coat in the UK there is £40 VAT. Coats bought from Germany should never have been exempt.

Have you tried buying a £40 coat like the rest of us?

No shit.

Also costing more to buy from China

But we won the war.

smartysue Thank god we have arrived at Boris Johnson Sunny 😎 Uplands 😹😹😹😹😹😹😹😹😹, I mean really what did people think would happen being a third country.

Greater choice is now only for the wealthy😕 brexitreality

Maybe if the BBC had reported honestly and accurately, during the last six years, on the many consequences of Brexit things like this wouldn't be a 'shock' to people?

'NEWS' 🤣🤣

So buy British, or from counties that we have free trade with. It’s not rocket science.

Wow, some middle class twat had to pay a bit more on their already overpriced foreign jacket. Who really gives a shit about this?

Thang thang .that tha. Lich su

Buy British? You do realise we don’t manufacture anything anymore, Thatcher saw to that in the 80’s

Well it's the same other way round. Just bloody paid the extortion customs on a pair of trainers. It cost me far more with delivery than it would if I travelled to UK and buy. Thanks BrexitReality

Don't buy from the EU then, there's a whole world out there

MalcolmNance Bummer. Shoulda thought of that when you were voting your racist instincts on Brexit.

Moan moan moan....remoaners

It's what the sheep voted for. Baaaaaarmy.

good.

What rate of vat is that?

Should support our workers and buy British, lesson learnt.

This is one the many reasons we are worse off out of the EU, it’s not like this was explained to the people when we voted leave/remain. Can’t imagine what it’s like for a small company where their main customers are in the EU or visa versa. It’s not always possible to buy British

You have to wonder if this is scaremongering by remoaners

I would like to see that itemised.

That’s what they voted for. Being a third country. This is what it means to not be in the single market and customs union. Why didn’t you mention this five years ago?

some British businesses and their associate politicians (parasites) have to pocket more money! That was the point of the referendum: Hale National Parasites

I see that what brexit means is finally dawning on Brits who thought it was just about foreigners, WW2 and reclaiming the empire.

Awesome, they will buy from business in the UK instead. 👍

Celtusthechief No way!! Call me shocked.

And you’re only reporting on this now? Shame

Presumably your supplier didn't charge you EU VAT? If they did, you've been double charged and it is not the British tax authorities who are at fault. £80 UK charges is a tad steep though when 20% would work at at £40.

I didn't buy anything from Europe in the whole time we were in the EU. Who the f**k shops in the EU? And, since Brexit, ignorance of the new rules are not an excuse.

No kidding

That is fine it was your choice to buy from USA, but for many years it did not cost anything extra to buy from the EU. It is down to the UK leaving the EU that has put costs up.

41% vat?

Daltreyism =the deluded faced with reality.

Never mind sure she knew from watching the completely impartial that explained for the people the pros and cons clearly before the election.....

don't buy it .

Never happened though did it.

Plenty of nice coats available in Marks and Spencer or John Lewis

Buy British?

Brexit means brexit hun lol bet she voted for it. All these idiots who voted for & now moaning constantly because they couldn’t be bothered to find out what it would actually mean leaving the EU! Now deal with it.

Wow. Who would have thought there would be any changes?

This was expected. Anyone thinking that this would not, are really quite ignorant of the fact that this is one of the facts of Brexit. For many, though, despite of being warned about this, the reality is only beginning to sink into their heads now!

So the land of milk and honey that Farage and co promised is fucked. Just as foretold but ignored.

Buy British

Maybe best to avoid buying from EU in the future.

Buy from a uk based company and don’t get the additional charge, simple..! there has been adverts about being ready from the 1st of the year... get over it .... 🤣🤣🤣

Incentive for British firms to start manufacturing.

Lets see how mnay start crying when the truth hits and the price od Prosecco in Aldi goes up...

NO SHIT SHERLOCK that’s why we joined to get rid of such things!

MalcolmNance

Thanks for costing is all an shit ton of extra VAT costs, people that voted to leave. Thanks a lot. Those who voted to leave should foot the VAT costs, they wanted this so badly...

It will encourage people to buy more British made goods.

Brexit means brexit hun lol bet she voted for it

Just about to send BBC another email highlighting a whole raft of issues that the new deal has affected. Vat on your coat is nothing to what is going to hit us ! See my earlier tweets for some idea !

Has she worked out why the coat was 20% cheaper by buying it from outside the UK yet?

So much winning. 🙄

To all the people that voted to leave, and then googled 'what is the E.U' the NEXT day. Thanks.

N could

A wee reminder

This is fake news. We have always had our own level of VAT on imports YES even from within the EU BUT we have agreed a free trade deal so whoever is trying to charge import duty is breaking the law.

Surprise...surprise....go call the PM as he said so himself there will be no changes and if anybody encounteres any issues just give him a buzz and he’ll sort it

It's what you championed, own it

Keep going bbc hunting anti brexit stories. Defundbbc

You only have to look closely at products in store and they are all made outside of the Uk. We have to import foods like mustard, salad cream, tomato ketchup, chocolate products even Rizla papers are made in France.

congrats :)

Buy British then and support our economy!!

The fees have always been there. Try buying from outside the EU and you will find this out.

You should be paying VAT. Dodging tax by buying overseas is a company con. Back companies that support British, that’ll be a good start.

It's not true what many comments say. The EU doesn't punish Britain or British people. UK has got what it was asking for: Brexit with all its consequences. Only people who voted Remain are now allowed to complain. All others have to eat what they ordered

Not sure what people expect now. BREXIT wasn't a game and this is the results. There will be and are consequences for leaving the club, or course there are. And this is just the start.

Only took you three weeks to realise this.

If she was going to buy a British made coat she would be spending between £200 - £600 we don't mass produce coats in the UK you spanners. All high street brand in UK outsorces manufacture to countries like China, Bangladesh and India.

Should have bought BRITISH no sympathy 😡😡

Haha, what a shame...!!

Repeated news again!

So, it turns out Brexit isn’t all good? Maybe someone should have said something sooner...

It seems those Brexiter vox pops you doing weren’t really providing the information we needed.

ticgran If you voted for Brexshit hell mend ye, if not, commiserations

Oh oh oh breaking news leaving EU means we problems because this shit Government is useless. Vat and duty is not a problem. The problem is requiring business in EU to register with HMRC for VAT so vat is paid at point of sale for items £135 Normally this is paid at import.

Yeah it is buy British or line the pockets of various middlemen collecting import duty and absolutely shocking fees on top of everything! You should also announce that people in EU (Like Ireland) need to do the same to buy British - so they won't!!!!

Buy British then. We have a booming industry in £200 coats, probably.

This isn’t just ‘shopping’ items that you buy as a treat either - it’s functional items like car parts. It’s on everything. I bought a used motorcycle part on eBay from abroad, and was charged VAT as part of the transaction.

And you made this perfectly clear throughout the referendum yeah?

If only you were some kind of news and current affairs service that could have explored and explained this to people when they could have acted on it?

This has been known for months but denied by the Govt as ' teething problems ' do your job and report it ,and the carnage haulage firms are facing as they cannot get permits .

Glad you announced this as news to everyone 2 hours ago BBC. Good work at being an impartial news organization.

this goes to show how damn stupid and idiotic brexit was

You bbcnews have a huge part of this load to carry. You...YOU... filled the news with pro brexit nonsense. Misrepresented the facts, allowed disingenuous and outright false claims on air without any hint of balance or responsibility. We see you!

Never seen that coming.

I’m happy she can still afford a £200 coat !!

Yet another‘benefit’ of Brexit..

Well everyone knew what they were voting for

Where is that Gove person who was a Brexit cheerleader? Seems to me he and others are using Covid-19 to hide when they should be either explaining the benefits of Brexit to us again or apologising for what they’ve done

Yes... How is this news today? This was warned about prior to the referendum - but we were ignored and told that we were project fear.

A bit late to this story, BBC?

UKBreturn Shoppers buying goods in the EU from UK suppliers face the same charges. FINALLY you report it!!! Jeez!!!

I bought something online. I've just spotted on the tracking that it was sent from the Netherlands. The seller's web site says all taxes and duties are paid at time of purchase. But I'm not sure they can pay customs upfront now. I'm seriously worried about this.

My thoughts are with this poor lady. SaveOurCoats

JaneyGodley I'm stunned, I tell you. Stunned.

😂

NeilDrysdale Don't buy from the EU. Not complicated.

Just to be clear: customs and VAT charges to EU imported goods are imposed by the British HMRC, not the EU. This has nothing to do with a 'EU revenge' on Brexit. Also whilst workers visas and movement between UK and EU can be reviewed, such levies on goods will not.

Trade barriers are not good for business. Basic. Of course the economy is going to suffer. Soon Scotland will leave and hopefully northern Ireland will demand independence and thats basically it for the UK.

I blame Nigel_Farage

Brilliant journalism. What did you think was going to happen? JFC!

Why now!!! brexitdone Brexiteers did you not know what you where voting for maybe if the BBC journos were proper journlist they could have highlighted some of the down sides of Brexit costofbrexit bbc notfitforpurpose

wolvesbradders 'Spotted a bargain... £200 coat'. Apart from sitting on your back what else does it do? For that money i'd want it to make me a brew every day for a year!

Well, colour me shocked, little Englander's flag banging Brexit is going to cost us all a fortune.

An excellent time to BuyBritish There are thousands of excellent fashion brands who manufacture in the U.K.

Isn't this what you voted for?

Yes, this is called brexshit. It's Taking Control Of Our Borders. It's Ending Freedom Of Movement. It's The Will Of The People. Why didn't you tell anyone about this five years ago?

Maybe if had made people aware that this was going to be one of the very real consequences of brexit, and not given quite so much airtime to 'project fear' denialists, this wouldn't be a shock to the nation's consumers ? 🤔

Buy British they shout.... It's almost as if none of them knew that the stuff that's in all those shops isn't actually made here..... Our biggest failing as a country was not educating our people in how the worldwide economy works 🙄

I see many comments (and criticisms) for those who are complaining about the new situation. However I haven't seen anybody so far in this thread, who has been able to identify an actual, current, real, tangible BENEFIT of Brexit.

Even funnier if your coat was manufactured in China/Asia and you thought you were been sophisticated buying from Europe.

What was expected Brexit been done and the trading advantages which we had when we were part of the EU are long gone, being replaced by the new Trade Agreement. Perhaps they're only teething troubles. Perhaps......

The Tory regime did this - report on THAT How do flag shaggers feel now?

I am happy with this. It has made me more conscious of the importance of buying British as much as I possibly can👌

Be nice to afford a £ 200 coat

And the morale of the story is, watch where your purchase is coming from.

Found no bother buying mine from UK 👍🏻

Where have you been? Did you not notice Brexit? This is what is referred to as a statement of the totally bleeding obvious!

Brexit means Brexit. It also means buyers in the EU will not buy from the U.K. anymore and will switch to EU suppliers to get their purchases tax-free.

JaneyGodley MrBrowstone82 👀

Buy, Back, British..

No way! Who'd have thunk it...

This is what the Conservatives signed up to for the UK population Plus - Queues at immigration - Less choice and higher prices for food - The death of numerous UK businesses - Reduced security This is not news, it is direct consequence of a bigoted, shortsighted policy

You could always support your own country and buy British. 🙄

Obviously nobody from the BBC has ever been abroad, brought goods back and declared them to customs. VAT has always been payable on goods brought into the country, otherwise British companies would set up in the EU, export goods to the UK and be able to sell it tax free.

woops Yay Brexit!

Then buy British or pay more simple

Got what they voted for then eh? Still be plenty that somehow think Brexit was a good idea though 😂

I hate to say this but we told you so! And it works the same with goods from UK to EU.... another wonder Brexit benefit but hey the fish are happy BrexitCarnage

You’d have to be some kind of sucker to buy a sweat shop produced garment for £200 anyway! 😂

JaneyGodley Because we're winning now, right Nige ?

Project fear becomes project here.

JaneyGodley Who knew?

MalcolmNance Taken back control yet?

This is what happens when you give facts and misleading lies the same balance in an argument. I doubt if you will learn from your mistakes.

End of an empire

Anne84911 This is what promoted.

Buy from the UK them

Bizarre that this is news.

Always had to when buying from USA, no different now buying from Europe. They knew this was going to happen

That gift was not just for Christmas it’s the gift that keeps giving.....

Already paid 25 quid for a small parcel posted to Greece, I may have cried a bit...

PeachesNplum No shit. What did you think was going to happen BBC? You can share the blame for this, pushing Brexiters onto your political programnes, not challenging blatant lies. So much for free trade.

JaneyGodley if you had done your job properly, you would have put this on the news BEFORE it happened, warning people that this was a consequence of Brexit. Instead you championed Brexit.

JaneyGodley Anybody who can happily afford £200 for a coat right now should shut up quite frankly.

If they are exporting I don't think they should be applying VAT from selling country only in the UK so price should be more or less the same. Or have I got this wrong?

davegreenidge57 Turns out brexit was dumb af

fake brexit news!

The BBC, 3 weeks slow with the news as usual. Sunak announced VAT changes before Xmas ffs while the customs charges were known about as soon as the ink was on the EU-UK agreement.

This is what they voted for.

You bought a coat for £200 and you go on BBC to share your touching story so they’ll feel sorry for you. Some people have never had real problems in their lives!

Why weren't you explaining this would happen, ooh, five years ago or even, if you weren't sure, as soon as Mrs May set out her 'red lines'? It was quite clear from then on what BrexitShambles would happen. ProjectReality

KEEP IT IN THE UK THEN FFS!

So many very stupid people making the 'buy British' argument who don't realise that after 40 years of destroying our manufacturing base we don't actually make that much in the UK anymore. 🤡

Oh the humanity!!!!!!

SHOULD BUY BRITISH THEN!!!!!!

You take a licence fee from us. You promise to inform etc etc. You chose not to. This was no surprise. Why didn't you inform people before now. This is why you are losing support and your future is grim

JaneyGodley They say it's an EXTRA £82 which is the Brexit mindset of blaming EU. In reality we SAVED £82 when in EU. Put that on the side of a bus Boris.

JaneyGodley That's life 👍 You've got to shop around these days 🤔 Because Europe can't get money off UK as a whole, they will try and charge us individually. EU corruption!

“Person aware of impending departure from trading block for FOUR YEARS suddenly surprised to learn that taxes and duty might be incurred on future imports”. No sh*t. Sorry, no sympathy (whether she’s a remainer or a leaver). This has always applied from places outside the EU.

For balance the cost could have cost £282 and the customs was free

First-world problems

oh well, this is what you voted for. Good luck with it. Glad I don't live there any more.

championed leave not profiling these sort of terrible changes that were completely unnecessary- bbc is a Tory propaganda machine. Just look at who BorisJohnson put in the 2 top jobs

Oh, how awful. I imagine that’s a meal for your children.

And no I won’t be buying British to avoid the expense. I will simply buy fewer products!

I imagine that half the feckers moaning voted for it too.

Why „now“? You knew that when Britain voted for Brexit !

Yet strangely I've always been able to buy stuff from China or USA eg on eBay and it arrives within 2 weeks and no extras are charged? 🤔

That looks like one of the fabled benefits of Brexit. More expensive products that take long to arrive!

So, buy British...

Ok so buy UK goods then don't buy EU goods .. just research before you buy to see where its coming from.. Most clothes are made in the third world anyway.

Welcome to Brexit! As if you didn’t realise the UK would become a 3rd country! Just a little island in Europe!😂 BorisJohnson

This was expected. This was warned about. This was delegitimised. This was labelled ‘crank behaviour’. Now it’s happened, who is accountable for this mess?

It’s not customs or VAT either ffs. It can be BOTH. How can you get this wrong now nevermind the fact that this has been obvious for 4 fucking years. Why didn’t you tell people then?

Very good...why would have brexit in the first place...it was pointless and stupid

Ooops..

Buy British!

Brexit wins yay 💪

What did they think would happen !!!? They voted for this !!

Wow, what a completely predictable downside.

I’ve been caught by this buying records from Europe - Brexit keeps on giving

WE TOLD YOU!!!!!!! 🙈

£200 coat? I'm sure you can afford the extra 82? 🤔

You don't say?

A fool and their money are easily parted. 🤷

Maybe this is where the extra money for the NHS will come from.

in other news: 'water is wet'

£282 for a coat? Leavers couldn't afford that even for a skiing hat. If they could afford skiing holidays of course like remoaners.

It's not the UK, it's GB. Shopper in NI shouldn't liable for these charges as we are still in the single market.

If you can afford to pay £200 for a coat I’m sure you can afford an extra £85

Buy British then.

What the article does not mention is that the EU company sending the goods do NOT pay VAT on exports so they are making extra money. The prices offered by these companies should be without VAT as they are exports.

Er, duh. Not like we have been sayin that since 2016 or anything. We are a third country now, remember. The EU is following the rules we helped write. Oh the irony.

Got what you asked for 🤷🏻‍♀️

I browsed the web for running shoes. At checkout I was asked to complete a 3 page form and pay additional duty taking the shoes way above previous price. I didn’t bother. I’m bot buying anything now.

MalcolmNance RejoinEU

But you have extremely happy fish because they are British fish, and blue passports. Who cares about being unable to afford good you used to be able to afford, right?

It’s not as if it isn’t there to check out before you buy. The new rules have been advertised. No different to buying from the USA

Maybe the *British* Broadcasting Corporation should be encouraging people to BuyBritish ?

MalcolmNance Quelle surprise! Membership has its benefits?

Ah! But remember, those customers will have blue passports And there will be no foreigners doing the buying or the selling Your plan is working just as you hoped Brexit - owned by Tories, Farage and the BBC All in it together

Brexiteers....you caused this.

Lol £200 for a coat. More money than sense. There's some great ones in Primark.

Brexit what joke

The ‘will of the people’ apparently 🙄😩

so Brexiters have voted for a higher cost of living

Well, obviously?

Another excellent benefit of severing ties with the worlds biggest trading block that was 20 miles away. But on the plus side we now have a free trade agreement with Somoa.

Who cares

Enjoy paying for your bigotry

As intended, no? Why is this a surprise?

Yes, this is what 'we' voted for! At what point do 'we' accept there are little-no benefits of this crass exercise that was designed only ever to increase the wealth of the wealthiest & make most of us worse off. Dumb as!

Simple solution, buy in the UK.

Yes that's because we are no longer in the EU NEXT

To be fair to those who voted for Brexit we were told by prominent MPs that “Brexit does not mean the UK will leave the single market”. Oh well, the Brexit dividend will be achieved by simply not buying expensive coats from Europe I guess

Don’t buy anything from Europe then you numptys.

The whole idea of getting out of the EU was to bring back jobs to the UK. So, create factories to produce items like coats you know, like we used to make decades ago, and make British economy strong again. Get rid of the Chinese stuff which lasts about a year and decays after

God the replies on here show how bloody economically illiterate many Leavers are.

the same if you live in Europe and buy from the UK. This is Brexit

🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄 anyone interested!!

Boring 💤

Buy from Britain then?

Buy British then.

Knew what they were voting for😄😄😄😄

Simple don’t buy from Europe, they will suffer with loss of sales, which will result in them lowering prices, support local businesses and help U.K. get back on its feet.

Covid-19 pandemic change economy and it affected many companies..

I've bought a hat from Stetson in Germany and I've had no extra charges, go figure.

Diddums... is this news ? £200 coat.

If I can't buy nice goods from the EU at a decent price, I'll bloody well just buy a local potato instead.

How surprising lol

I've never paid £200 for a coat in my life. I guess this is how the other half live.

Some companies I’ve looked at have stopped charging UK customers VAT so only natural there may be charges.

Not really what the gammon envisioned

This happened to me this week, but I simply refused delivery (as it was £350 they wanted) and then two days later delivery arrived again with 0 charges.

Are we surprised?

Well worth completing this to make the BBC understand what shitbag remoaners they are.

She is going to regret mentioning cost of that coat for a long time.

Another of Boris's balls ups for the UK citizens and more money for the government coffers. BorisJohnson

And ? Just buy from within the uk

This is a disgrace, but so is what the U.K. government and all of the idiots who voted for this garbage have done to the music industry. But nevermind cos THE WAR

Funny that.

There was a time when every town & city in the UK was famous all over the world for producing exceptional products. Globalization put an end to all that.

No tariffs... No hassle...

Buy British...simples!

LOL ... BrexitReality

Don’t buy it then

We did it before. So what?

Yet more winning over here in the sunlit uplands

Cry more.

But they’re in control of their borders

Shocker

At least our fish are happy!!! Hope you Brexiteers are happier now. It’s only going to get worse!

The dividends continue!

Hands up all those who buy their coats from mainland Europe and have them shipped over. No, me neither.

Don't care. Not really news, is it!

The joys of populist nationalism.

Is this items that have been ordered in U.K. from an online company in U.K. who get their goods from Europe. Or was the order placed directly with a company in Europe?

Buy it from the uk then? Who knew every product anyone ever wanted was made and sold in the uk? BrexitReality BrexitShambles

Anyone with a brain knew this was coming. We got what we voted for. This is the consequence of leaving the EU.

Welcome to Brexit, however we are told the fish are happier!

My heart bleeds

So buy local then.

A hike in VAT they kept quiet about. A 20% + customs for all small business will mean many go bust

I bought some stuff just after Christmas from Germany and it got sent back because of the paperwork 🙄.
