At the end of a tumultuous season, full of internal strife and external noise, the Celtic manager achieved a league and cup Double by once again rising above the sound and the fury. As he has done since the season started.
It’s as if history is falling into place in order to accommodate Rodgers’ fondest wishes. Yesterday, on May 25, the most iconic date in all of Celtic’s 136 year existence, he won the Scottish Cup against his club’s greatest rivals, Rangers. This can now be seen, with the benefit of hindsight, as a sizeable mis-calculation of his squad’s collective determination. Rodgers, on the other hand, can do no wrong in terms of manipulating his group’s mindset.
When Santa Claus came out of the tunnel at Celtic Park last weekend carrying the Premiership trophy it was a cleverly thought out note of humour. It recalled the afternoon in December when Santa was roundly booed by the home crowd during a half-time appearance that co-incided with an ongoing display of dubious merit from the team on the park who were busily losing to Hearts.
Should that happen, the fall-out at Ibrox would be of seismic proportions. I’ve never fully got to grips with the relevance of titles won even before I was born to matters concerning the present day, but that’s not the point.
