That is the question some have been left pondering after the sentencing of William Walker, who admitted two counts of attempted sexual communication with a child.
The DUP may have hoped to avoid much of this controversy, as the party swiftly suspended Walker following his arrest and he later quit Newry, Mourne and Down council.Glyn Hanna confirmed to the Belfast Telegraph he wrote a reference, saying it was a short note which did not contain anything important. Mr Hanna has now withdrawn the reference, saying he was misled by Walker.
As for the DUP, the party has so far remained silent, refusing to give any response to one of their councillors providing a reference.The veteran councillor is a member of the DUP association in South Down, where party leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson has strong family ties having grown up in Kilkeel. Last year it emerged a DUP MP wrote a court letter for a Tory MP facing a child sexual assault charge to support his bid to gag the press. In the letter Brian Kerr, who stood for election in May to Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council, said Thompson Beckett had made a "positive difference to the community during the Covid crisis".
