David Bowie’s mum ordered him to duet with Bing Crosby for Christmas hit, reveals his daughter Mary.

wasn’t exactly dusting down his festive knitwear and humming Jingle Bells when a collaboration with the legendary US singer on his yuletide television show was first mooted.High Swoon... Mary in sexy Cowboy shoot for Dallas in 1980 - she reveals her family ties with BowieMary Crosby and co on her father's festive 'Sun Valley Christmas' show in 1973fan. So if it wasn’t for Peggy Jones, the Christmas classic Peace On Earth/Little Drummer Boy might never has been recorded.

Luckily, Bowie took his mother’s advice and the song eventually became one of his biggest hits, as well as a Christmas staple.Despite its success, the track doesn’t match the towering status of Bing’s seminal festive hit White Christmas — the biggest-selling single ever. Mary was just 18 when her father died of a heart attack on a Spanish golf course, four days after his final concert — and just a month after recording his duet with Bowie in London. She is Bing’s only daughter and the second of three children from his marriage to Kathryn Grant.

Mary, 60, says: “I would say more quietly joyous than excited and loud. We had a really huge Christmas tree in this big, beautiful home where I got to spend my whole childhood — and where my mother still lives." There was no charades or board games either. Mary says: “We lazed around all afternoon and Dad watched sport on TV, as he had seen all the movies. We had to watch them without him.”By this point in Mary’s life, Bing was more or less retired. He had scaled down his work commitments to his annual TV specials, having established himself as one of the world’s best-loved singers.

One of the best and most optimistic songs he ever did. Wild as the Wind was good too. Shame his mum didn't talk him into more uplifting music cos it would have been exceptional like little drummer boy and absolute beginners.
