It appears the Prime Minister is already back-tracking on the new tier system before it even come into force across the England.

The plan is also likely to cause confusion among the public as it could mean many stay in tier three for just over a fortnight, before their status changes, while people in the same county would be living under different rules if a more localised approach is brought in.

Those expected to benefit include 16.4 million people in 88 boroughs where the infection rate is lower than some tier two zones, according toMr Johnson’s letter also said that the new rules would be scrapped entirely in February if MPs vote against them, in a remarkable change of tone.‘If we ease off now, we risk losing control… forcing us back into a new year national lockdown with all the damage that would mean.

Sir Keir Starmer is expected to take a decision on voting for the restrictions tomorrow, but has always previously backed the government’s public health measures.
