On one recent A&E shift, I treated a lady who had slipped on her front step and broken her hip, and because of her dementia she couldn’t communicate how much pain she was in to our already over-worked and short-staffed nursing teams. A few trolleys along was an elderly man with a urinary infection, lying alone, incontinent and drowsy.
Most of our patients are nearer 84 than 4 years old. They tend to be frail and even more vulnerable, stuck on a trolley in a corridor, uncomfortable, and easily overlooked for hours on end and often without someone accompanying them. A lot of the time, they’ve waited hours for an ambulance even before arriving at hospital.
Johnson also asserted that patients in the NHS generally ‘have a much, much better experience’ than Jack and his family. But for me and my colleagues, it’s getting increasingly difficult to ensure that even these ‘better experiences’ are the norm.The consequence of cumulative cuts to the NHS and social care mean that sometimes, even if we think we can get someone home from hospital with extra support, the services just aren’t there any more.
