The mood inside Boris Johnson’s camp is “more chipper than ever” despite the Privileges Committee report ruling he had lied to parliament, theipaper has been told janemerrick23 and singharj report

“Just remember James Callaghan, what that era was like, how we went into stagflation, what all this means.

“Boris will be using the current environment – double digit inflation, a chancellor who has spent too much money – where have we seen that before? “He’ll be clever not to mention Rishi but will say go back to the 1970s and the Labour government, that is how he thinks.”Nadine Dorries, one of the ex-prime minister’s leading cheerleaders in the Commons, said she doubted Mr Johnson would make a political comeback, despite other allies claiming he is planning a long-term return to the frontline.Ms Dorries said: “I don’t think he will.

The former minister, who has announced her intention to resign as an MP and trigger a by-election in her Tory safe seat of Mid-Bedfordshire, claimed in the interview that “since Boris was removed, parliament has ground to a halt. It’s a zombie parliament. It’s dead. Everybody’s at home. There are no votes”.

She also said the decision not to give her a peerage – which she blames Mr Sunak for by not intervening with the committee overseeing elevations to the Lords – was “to punish Boris”, adding: “If you look at my CV, I am as entitled as anyone else to go to the Lords – in fact, far more entitled than some.”
