Boris Johnson admits he was too optimistic about Brexit deal on Northern Ireland not causing trade friction

‘When I when I read , I looked at it with the eyes of optimism, and I thought that there was enough stuff in it,’ to ensure smooth trade over the Irish Sea, the Prime Minister saysDeputy Political EditorBoris Johnson has admitted he was too optimistic about the Brexit deal he signed on Northern Ireland and which he is now trying to renegotiate.

The Prime Minister said he thought there was “enough stuff” in the Northern Ireland Protocol to think it would not lead to an onerous effective trade border in the Irish Sea between Great Britain and Northern Ireland., which is being fiercely opposed by unionists who argue that it is undermining Northern Ireland’s place in the UK.

The UK has also tabled legislation allowing ministers to unilaterally rip up parts of the Protocol in a bid to persuade the Democratic Unionist Party to re-enter power sharing in Stormont, which has sparked retaliatory legal action by the EU.claimed the legislation was “politically driven”, suggesting it was designed to appease the Conservative Party base.
