Black intern: 'You just need to give us a chance'

Gold Oyelade, 22, just graduated from Warwick University, and has already landed a role in investment banking. The programme, which aims to help create future black business leaders, has justBlack people, who are under-represented in senior business roles, "just need a chance", Gold says.

"'Your network is your net worth' is alive and well, and can be a disadvantage to people who haven't had opportunities, or who don't know someone in a leadership position in the firm," she says."We don't see people like us in these firms to feel like we're welcome or we are good enough to be in these roles," she says.

Gold said that the 10,000 Black Interns initiative "will make a difference" in how black people perceive their chances in business, and in how they are perceived. Organisations ranging from City firms such as Goldman Sachs and HSBC through to tech giants Amazon, Facebook and Google and sporting giants such as Manchester UnitedMs Odejimi-Uzokwe says the programme is needed to help create future black leaders in the City of London and beyond.

There she saw first-hand that black people are under-represented in finance, and decided to try to help change that situation. On his success in scaling the corporate ladder, Mr Onuekwusi says: "I point to luck as well as hard work".

'Sorry, your under qualified'. That translates into 'because I'm black'

Any Intern: ‘You just need to give us a chance’ Can you please stop discriminating and being so racially biased. Go to Nigeria and South Africa and see how many white interns are getting such preferential treatment?

You don’t need to be given a chance! You deserve what every person deserves in society ♥️

I have no problems in a diverse team and I welcome it. I am concerned that this programme is called 10000 Black Interns. This is just as bad as calling the programme 10000 White Interns, and I am sure the later would not be accepted.

Why is 'diversity' so black centric 🤔 You never see these articles or initiatives for other minorities.🤷‍♀️

You have It. God bless you!

The fact that you apparently still need to ask for that chance speaks volumes.

The faith of her optimism is at the beginning of what will be a long and hard road of testing.

Nonsense.

no. i hire the best man for the job regardless of there gender

All interns, not just the blacks.

Those headlines are more racist than actual people

All suitably qualified people deserve the same opportunities. Other under represented people are getting left behind because focus on one group. As a person of colour I approached many support agencies for uni applications for my son & was ignored. Our skin not black enough.

bbc just can’t get enough of race aggravation 😔

Governments want control. It is easier to control a population if we are divided. Thus media drives hate and division so the state can better control the populous - divide and conquer. Most people wouldn't care about skin colour if the media didn't force this trash narrative.

Maths is not racist. Black people make up 5% of the population...ethnic minorities in total only 15%. So for every 10 graduate interns there are 1.5 ethnic minorities and 8.5 white.

'Your network is your net worth' is absolutely alive and well. We need a 10,000 interns from working class backgrounds (regardless of colour) as getting a foot in the door is the problem for many.

You are employed for your capabilities NOT skin colour. Employing people to tick boxes means your business will be second rate.

And you need to give people a reason to give you a chance. This is true regardless of race.

More woke nonsense from BBC trying to push their destructive agendas

Only the BBC could represent a bunch of companies announcing they want to hire black people for low pay as a good thing

Everyone needs to be given a chance, regardless of colour etc. If you're good enough and suitably qualified then you will be given the chance

Always them

You know what? I really, really fear for the life chances of my white, straight, able-bodied son when he leaves school. He hasn’t got a prayer.

Very demeaning to lump yourself into a group defined by skin colour.

Unpaid workers

seems weird to celebrate having black people work for free again

Constantly late and never off their phones , in my experience.

And before you wipe your eyes out “us”is suing the crap out everyone for exploitation / racism/ me two / gender inequality / pronoun use/ ….. and the list goes on.

More identity 'News' from the BBC!!

Doesn’t EVERYONE deserve a ‘chance’…? Scum BBC at its best again on their divisive strategy…..

it’s tough for Interns of any colour these days here and overseas- there are so many experienced workers available due to covid, businesses aren’t taking on interns; it probably seems the right thing to do & good thinking for businesses short term but long term it probably won’t

Another scheme created for mediocre black students to get work they're not qualified or suitable for

Why do we never see any articles about the most underprivlidged group in Western Europe? The working class.

greed is good has no color bar.
