Scotland's midfield should fear no one – but it’s the challenge of becoming the sum of all our parts against Hungary that will decide our fate.
He was always available, always showing for the ball. Gilmour gets his head up and is capable of threading the ball between the lines. Scotland aren’t a side who will dominate the ball – don’t expect that against Hungary tonight. We need to purposely counter-press to get a share of the ball and that’s about Scott McTominay and John McGinn hustling the Hungarians. I coached Hungary’s centre-back Marton Dardai when I was assistant at Hertha Berlin so I know he’s not going to enjoy being hassled and harried.
Yes, we have width on the bench with James Forrest and Stuart Armstrong and they could have a massive role late in the game when Hungary get leggy. Our width comes from Andy Robertson on the left and Callum McGregor’s run on the overlap brought an assist for Scott McTominay’s goal against the Swiss. It’s okay to be a defensive side in style, look to hit on the counter-attack and provoke the opposition to play in areas where you attempt to win the ball back. What isn’t okay is to sit in a midfield block and be passive by giving boys such as Toni Kroos or Granit Xhaka freedom, time and space to dictate play.
Steve Clarke knows his players can’t become over-motivated and be suckered into being sent off. We saw the consequences of that with Ryan Porteous and his red card against Germany. We will still need to play on the edge but with calmness and control.
