The US President has urged Israel's leader to show restraint and avoid dragging the region into a wider war
The paucity of the American leader’s trust in his Israeli opposite number went unspoken, but was on loud display after months of grinding conflict in Gaza following the brutal Hamas assault on Israel last October. Either it leads to all-out war between the two nations, or – as the White House fervently hopes – the Iranian foreign minister is speaking the truth when he claims that “Iran has no intention of continuing defensive operations”.
Saturday night’s phone calls between Washington and Tel Aviv were reportedly heated, with Netanyahu and several other Israeli officials insisting the country must hit Iran hard following the dispatch of a reported 150 explosive-laden drones and multiple ballistic missiles in Israel’s direction. On ABC News, Kirby was asked whether the Iranian attack could lead to a wider war in the region, to which he replied: “The President does not believe it needs to move in that direction whatsoever.”“What Israel demonstrated last night was an extraordinary ability to defend itself,” said Kirby. “Their own military superiority was quite remarkable… very little got through and the damage was extraordinarily light.
The Biden strategy will now be put to the test, with the stakes enormous for a President whose re-election prospects have already been dimmed by the evaporation of support among grassroots Democrats who are fuming over his failure to take a tougher stand over the mounting civilian death toll in Gaza.
