The Horniman Museum in south-east London is returning 72 items

London's British Museum has 900 items from Benin, and Prof Tijani added: "I think the British Museum is watching, I believe they are now taking it deeply to see that they do something, because every museum across the world is saying it is not right for them to hang on to these objects."

The NCMM approached the Horniman in January 2022. After a consultation, and with the endorsement of the Charity Commission, the Horniman's trustees decided it was "moral and appropriate" to hand the artworks back.Soldiers burned and partially destroyed the Benin Royal Palace in 1897, looting and pillaging as they went. The Oba, or King, was forced into exile.

They include beautiful human and animal figures, ceremonial objects made from ivory and brass, and royal regalia. He said the individual plaques that make up the Benin bronzes were "like a page in a book" - telling the story of Benin - and the fact they have been scattered across the world was painful.

Two of the items being returned by the Horniman were acquired by its founder Frederick Horniman a month after the attack, directly from someone personally involved in the looting. Others were purchased two years later from a local resident.

London museum/British Government should as pay a huge fine to Nigeria because they made money/profits by having those artifacts in their possession for all those years.

The BENIN SLAVE EMPIRE which got rich from slaves, you mean? Now this museum is giving our heritage back to the descendants of those brutal thieving slave traders which the British empire stopped slaving, as with all the African slave trade done by Africans.

Good but do the plaques have some magic charm to solve the ailing Nigerian economy, because the average nigerian cares less about plaques but more about his livelihood

Disgusting! Going around the world looting, you should be ashamed of yourselves, Britons!

Well done HornimanMuseum !!! So appreciate seeing that your Board/Anthropology team has taken action

Great news, let's just hope the African countries will maintain, respect, appreciate and look after those objects like the British did and not end up looting them, themselves

Invest and make a lot of profit DM me
