Flourish NI, a Belfast charity, has been providing support services to survivors of modern slavery and human trafficking in Northern Ireland for the past ten years. The charity was founded by Jill Robinson and Elizabeth McKee in 2014 after they witnessed the prevalence of the issue during a trip to Thailand. They offer assistance to adult survivors, regardless of where the offences occurred, helping them before and after a National Referral Mechanism referral to reintegrate into society.

Read more: Majority of human trafficking victims identified in Northern Ireland come from three East African countriesThe majority of the survivors that Flourish NI work with had been trafficked from other countries and have been through hugely traumatic experiences during that time, but it also supports those from NI who have been trafficked locally.

She said: "In 2009, Elizabeth and I had been working in Thailand supporting survivors of trafficking there and when we returned home it was quite an eye-opener at how prevalent many of the issues were here and we felt that it was very important that we do something to increase awareness and do what we can to support survivors in Northern Ireland.

"They are often coming from war ravaged and poverty stricken areas, such as parts of East Africa, and have been trafficked during their journey, often under the false pretence that they will be going somewhere for legitimate work and housing. The trauma they have experienced during that time cannot be understated and you can see it in their eyes whenever they have to relive how difficult it was for them.

It also looks at ways of boosting their social confidence and building a network and community around them which helps to ensure that they are not at risk of future exploitation. "Given what some survivors have been through, these things can take time, but it is vital so they are able to move on and live healthy lives.
