Sabalenka says Wimbledon should tell crowd why no handshake between Russian, Belarusian and Ukrainian playersAryna Sabalenka thinks Wimbledon should make on-court announcements before matches involving players from Ukraine against Russians or Belarusians, to explain to the crowd why there will be no handshakes when they finish playing.
While Svitolina was saluted for her efforts, Azarenka was booed by a crowd that may have been unaware of Svitolina’s stance when it comes to handshakes with players from those countries.“For me personally, I think the tennis organizations, they have to come out with a statement that there will be no handshake between Russian, Belarusian, and Ukrainian players,” she said.
Last year players from Russia and Belarus were banned from competing at Wimbledon because of the war. They revoked the ban this year, as long as players from those nations signed personal declarations agreeing to compete in the tournament as neutrals and to not make statements supporting the war or the regimes involved in it. Another stipulation was that they would not receive any financial assistance from either nation or state-supported businesses.
She skipped the post-match questions in Paris twice after that, saying the exchange with the reporter had made her feel unsafe.
