London earned the nickname ‘Londongrad’ as the preferred destination for wealthy Russians. Many came to the UK unvetted on a 'golden visa' system. But the government is now scrapping the scheme in a crackdown on money laundering. Watch: Newsnight

London has earned the nickname ‘Londongrad’ as the preferred destination for wealthy Russians - some with links to the Kremlin.

It’s been estimated property worth more than £1.5bn has been financed with Russian ‘dirty money’ in the UK. Many of the Russian oligarchs who are close to Putin came to the UK unvetted on a golden ticket visa system. So how much influence have these oligarchs had in the UK? And how much Russian money is there in the UK?

Is it really? 1600 Russians have these golden visas. There are none left that want one. It would actually mean something if they cancelled all 1600 of the existing visas and deported the recipients.

Too late The Tory Party did their Russian masters bidding and took their bribes

Are the Tories going to give back the £2 million in donations from their Russian mates? What about all the dodgy Russian oligarchs they let in over the last 10 years?

This will do nothing to help the peoples of Ukraine. Sanctions in 2014 after Putin annexed Crimea did nothing. What will impact on the Russian people will be being banned from travel to the EU & UK.Banned from Uefa, Fifa, Olympics but I guess Money Counts More than Liberty🤔😷

Shutting the stable door……

That happened when Johnson was mayor

Under New Labour too.

How much are they, the Tories planning on giving back?

SDL40 “Crackdown”? Let’s be serious.

lewis_goodall I’ll believe it when I see it.

Seriously? I’m sure it’s another ToryLies

Bit late for that now.

No probs just get a passport in Malta or Cyprus hey presto you’re in

lewis_goodall Londonistan is what football fans from all over country call London,I wonder why bbc don’t mention that nick name .

fascinatorfun That’s just the sound of a stable door being bolted…

Why are they scrapping it only now, when we've known about Putin and Russian oligarchy/kleptocracy for decades ?

fascinatorfun Greedy criminals giving a home to other greedy criminals. That was never going to backfire, was it ...

Years of assimilating dodgy individuals and their dirty money into the financial and political fabric of the UK isn't going to be undone quickly - and the people who championed this approach aren't the people we should be trusting to reverse it.

That’s not it’s nickname 🤡

The Russian- funded Tory government concerned about the vast amount of Russian-linked money in London

s9tmt No point scrapping it after they’ve let everyone in and they’ve spent years donating is it. Now, this seems like the correct time to see the Russia report in all its glory so the government can prove we’re on the right side of what’s happening right now

Bit like the enforced tax we all have to pay called the TV licence a pot of gold for all the lefties that work there

lewis_goodall That's the tory coffers emptied then. This govt is owned.

lewis_goodall To late the money is in both the Tory Party and the wheels of every institution in the UK. The only solution is a change of Government. So any influence ends.

lewis_goodall But not if it's given to the Tory party themselves?

lewis_goodall This is interesting on property industry anxiety about a clamp down:

lewis_goodall Well that's the stable door bolted now where are those damned horses.

Whilst not so closet racists on Twitter call it, 'Londonistan'

Surely any money that leaves Russia to arrive to be spent in London is better being spent here than in Russia - and it can be confiscated too!

'Crackdown'? I suppose it depends on how you define crackdown but I suspect it will just be some feeble tinkering with the rubles, sorry, rules.

But is it.... or is this just lip service?

How then will the Torys be funded ?

'The government is now scrapping the scheme because they got found out.' Fixed it for you
