Andrea Catherwood speaks to Grainne Teggart, from Amnesty Northern Ireland and writer, Siobhan Fenton. What are the key issues for women in Northern Ireland in the upcoming General Election? After a long campaign from #FreePeriods, the Government agreed to fund a scheme to ensure all primary and secondary schools and colleges provided free period products to menstruating pupils. This was meant to start rolling out in September 2019 but has now been pushed back to January 2020. It is an opt-in scheme and so schools and colleges must sign up to receive free sanitary products.
Most Wikipedia profiles are of men. A British physicist has made it her mission to change that, adding pages for more than 800 women in STEM. But who really decides who is notable enough to be included in the encyclopedia? Dr Jess Wade explains her quest for diversity and equality online, and the real-life impact it can have on the careers of women scientists.

jesswade Phooey on the Librarian who wrote in to say they would never use Wikipedia and would always prefer to use Encyclopedia Britannica. This is not a fair comparison as they do different things - and I hope their students are learning critical thinking *somewhere*!

jesswade Have you linked up with WikiWomenInRed? They are doing this for women more broadly. This is super important work, so thank you! 👍🏽

gem_abbott Fab to hear efforts to eliminate period poverty. How does this sit with environmental impact of single use plastics? Will reusable items be offered (e.g. cups, pants, cloth)- best value for long lasting period mngmt esp where disposables cost too much. And I love them!
jesswade That sounds like a lot of work, we should just delete the articles about the men
gem_abbott This is already happening in Scotland. The FE College I teach at in the North East has been offering free products for over a year now. Such a great scheme which loads of our students benefit from periodpoverty CFINEAberdeen
