My Best Day - Suzanne Goldberg on the power of laughter

Vicky Phelan on exposing Ireland’s smear test scandal and living with its consequences. The latest from the Lib Dem conference. And listener Suzanne Goldberg's best day.Earlier in the summer we asked you, our listeners, to get in touch and send us a picture that somehow captured you at your best. Not just looking your best, but feeling your best. Hundreds of you got in touch with pictures of your best day, and we’ll be running as many of your stories as we can. Today….

With continuing division over Brexit in Parliament and a General Election expected soon, the Liberal Democrat party’s president, Baroness Sal Brinton, joins us from the Lib Dem Party Conference. What opportunity does the current chaos offer the party and what is their message to women? Vicky Phelan has become one of the most well-known and well-respected women in Ireland. She exposed a medical scandal which not only affected her but affected over 200 other Irish women as well. She found out that cervical smear tests, like hers, were mistakenly given the all clear but turned out to be abnormal. This meant women weren’t given important treatment that might have prevented cancer or halted it. Vicky took her case to court and won. She was awarded 2.5 million Euros in compensation.

What does it mean to be a woman in the 21st century? Anna Hope’s third novel, Expectation, opens with three young women in their twenties, living a precarious but happy life in a rented house in Hackney, London. Ten years on they are not where they had hoped to be. Anna joins Jane to discuss friendship, love, the pain of infertility, motherhood, work and feminism.

PhelanVicky janegarvey1 Now this is the type of story that should be featuring, not the constant barrage of LGBTQs. Surely this was the whole point of woman’s hour?

PhelanVicky janegarvey1 Well done to the producers of for highlighting this and for having our own Irish hero, PhelanVicky on to tell the story not only for her but for all the women out there faced with this massive challenge. Real journalism is still alive! WellDone

SalBrinton When will remainers understand that leavers voted for Sovereignty, we weren’t influenced by anything anyone said to us.

PhelanVicky janegarvey1 Prostate Cancer still kills more than Breast/Cervical Cancers. There is still no screening programme. It still receives a fraction of the Breast Cancer funding. There is still no BBC Men's Hour for men to discuss it. Enjoy your privilege while you still can.

SalBrinton 'A lot of people in a lot of high places have completely lost the plot of what constitutes liberal democracy. And 48% of the serfs lower down are too deaf from yelling to notice the driverless truck careening towards them'.

BBCRadio4 PhelanVicky janegarvey1 Heard this. What amazing courage.

SalBrinton Sal Brinton said many women are in low paid jobs. Why does she think this is!? Raising State Pension Age for ladies born in 1950/60s by up to 7yrs hasn't helped. And hard to see how mass unskilled EU immigration boosts wages either. After all, in Bulgaria min wage is £1.50 an hr.

SalBrinton So janegarvey1 mentioned the bedroom tax, which people are rightly angry about, but what about all the rest, these policies were supported by the LibDems and have absolutely crushed chronically sick and disabled people ⬇️ How is it in any way “Liberal”?

SalBrinton I am sickened by her interview. She has nothing of value to say about her party plans, just slurs of labour. We will never forget how damaging you were in co-elition

SalBrinton It would have been good to hear Sally's view on Libdem appalling attitude towards the erasure of the category of women and girls, and their sex based rights, in their embracing of trans rights.

SalBrinton I have every sympathy with the arguments about the Leave campaign, & I personally want to Remain, but I wish that there would be more debate & concern about the existing poverty & suffering caused by Austerity & cuts, not just Brexit. I'd like to hear about climate change too.

SalBrinton Ask Sal Brinton if she would be happy if Parliament consisted of half men and half transwomen. Further why doesn't Lynne Featherstone welcome women who want to retain single sex spaces into the LibDems?
