After a press conference where Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe expressed her opinion on why it took so long to bring her home, 'ungrateful' started trending on Twitter. Why do you think some people feel uncomfortable with her speaking her mind?

Because it is easy and they can. To understand her anguish means we put ourselves in a vulnerable position; by seeing her vulnerability. No one wants that hopelessness. It is confirmation that she is right and people are ashamed they didn't do enough. So they attack.

Because she’s right

Because she is a woman and because she’s telling the truth.

I expect she was supposed to simper in gratitude to the government so it could be another 'all praise Johnson and his cabinet' headline but she spoilt it by telling the truth.

Because the truth hurts. I hope she keeps campaigning for those who are stuck in prison in Iran.

When women “speak their mind” many people translate that to “complaining”.

What a wonderful husband she has....he never gave up on her, kept her in the limelight and fought the hardest for her return.

It doesn’t fit their narrative. Some people will never get used to hearing a female expressing intelligent and strong views. They just want the smiling photo.

People are upset because quite frankly they feel entitled for praise for doing their job. Even when it was a terrible job that lasted 6 years longer than it should've. There's a contingent which is racist and a contingent with is misogynist.

Because she’s a woman.

How can a woman be called ungrateful when she was imprisoned & held hostage for 6 yrs cos Britain refused 2 pay a massive debt to Iran? She’s been thru utter hell because of it. Boris made it a trillion times worse with his stupid comments.I’d be pissed off as hell. She is right!

What happened to 'be kind'. This woman owes no one anything but should be getting all our support. It was BorisJohnson and his stupidity that landed her six years more as a hostage because the UK gov did not pay their debts. Start assessing why you are angry at her, an not BJ

she looks a lot healthier than her husband

Emmabarnett When you start snivelling at the next round of budget cuts and talk about the BBC’s ‘independence’ this is yet another example of that being bollocks.

welcomehomenazanin I’ve seen criticism of her disagreeing with her husband! Maybe those who criticise would prefer it in Iran?

To think that an opinion is ungracious and perhaps lacking any sense of personal reflection or responsibility is not the same as being “uncomfortable with someone speaking their mind”. Try impartiality, BBC. You might yet survive if you learn it again.

Wow - even by the BBC’s standards that’s a loaded question.

NazaninZaghariRatcliffe Understandably v. hard for her to be objective but given the cruel monsters who run Iran, buying her freedom will (a) simply encourage them to seize others & (b) give them nearly £500 mill. to fund terrorism around the world. Moral:never, ever go to Iran

You seem to conflate not wanting someone to be able to speak their mind with not agreeing with what they say. You can say whatever you want to. It doesn't mean I have to like it.

*Woman criticised* Woman’s Hour - “Is this misogyny?”

ferazmustafa Before acknowledging the fact that people’s views are obviously loaded with different forms of discrimination, a more simple view; an incredible lack of empathy.

It’s an uncomfortable truth. No one likes to be shown their shortcomings. Perhaps if we all did this a little more often the world might become a better place

Because she is a woman who has not got down on bended knee to thank the totally incompetent( being generous here) who left her in prison for 6 years. Plus there is an element of racism to contend with. I applaud her!

Imagine the privilege of having a national broadcaster campaigning for you, a Govt purging £400m on you and being rescued simply because of your sex. femaleprivilege DefundTheBBC

Because the BJ did what these people wanted got Brexit done and no matter what he says or does they will support him not understanding that the U.K. is diminished by him and enhanced by this woman and her husband. Very best wishes to them.

Not pink and fluffy enough. Woman! Know your place! (Harry Enfield)

She spoke out, people properly hate women who speak out.

People don’t like to hear the truth it hurts there feelings 🙄

Emmabarnett It’s the know you’re place syndrome.

She’s absolutely right! She has no obligation to say something that may satisfy a group of people but telling the truth about her own experience and sharing her opinion.

Perfectly summed up here by SangitaMyska

Because of course, xenophobia and bigotry is running through the veins of the UK.. A confident independent minded woman, her truthfulness and ethnicity all toxic to the bigoted right wing who's first instinct is to cover for a negligent government

Surprised she spoke so soon, you’d think she would just want to enjoy being home especially with her daughter. Being held so long she certainly looked good

Emmabarnett Perhaps those suggesting she is ungrateful should also, through no fault of their own, spend time in an Iranian jail. Not knowing when the UK government will get them released.

Trying to defend an indefensible gov with a little misogyny on the side

Maybe because she’s a woman with a voice! That’s her power and the humiliation of those in her path is ABSOLUTE! I’m in awe of this woman NazaninZaghariRatcliffe REMEMBER HER NAME

Emmabarnett Because some men are deeply insecure and are about to have a heart attack when strong, clever, opinionated woman like her speaks her mind.

I feel more sorry now for her poor husband.

Emmabarnett She’s 100% entitled to say whatever she wants. Would maybe just have waited a little longer before going in front of the cameras though.

Because they are privileged individuals with their heads in tory sand! If they where stuck in a foreign prison on trumped up charges regardless of where, they would also be angry at our foreign secs for taking so long. Even Jeremy hunt said she had every right to be angry.

Woman. Non-White. 'Tone.' The usual nauseating checklist.

She is a smart woman, justifiably angry that it took 6 years to get her out of jail for something she didn't do, in a country where speaking her mind would likely have further increased her sentence. Six years of burning with incandescent anger at being separated from her family.
