BBC director general Tim Davie 'prepared to fire stars who break impartiality rules'

BBC director general Tim Davie has said he would be prepared to sack presenters who make major breaches of impartiality guidelines on social media.

Pressed on how people could be removed from Twitter, he clarified that in some cases he would ask staff to suspend their Twitter accounts if they wanted to continue working for the BBC. "Social media guidelines will make clear where the lines are. If someone is a face of the BBC, I think entering into party politics seems to me not the right place to be."Asked specifically about Lineker, Mr Davie said the Match of the Day host had"always got a flavoursome turn of phrase", but"understands his responsibilities as a person within the BBC".

The new social media guidelines will cover people working in all areas of BBC programming, Mr Davie said. Mr Davie referred to"the historical rate for the Radio 2 breakfast show" and said such leading presenters were able to look at"entertainment options across television and radio".

GaryLineker best behaviour time then 😂

I'll call b******t on that

A message to the BBC from over 35,000 people gathered in Trafalgar Square last Saturday: 'Take down the BBC. Take down the BBC. Take down the BBC. Take down the BBC' - people could have happily chanted that non-stop for an hour!:

The BBC is finished anyway. Does anyone think it's worth the licence fee anymore. I don't know any younger people that pay it.

start with bbclaurak please

So maybe, in a few weeks/months/years time, the BBC might get round to having impartiality in reporting. I won't hold my breath.

Isn’t it about time BBC Trust grew a spine and stood up to political interference. BBC has impartiality rules but step back & see the whole picture... this is about state control by the right now... and every subsequent Govt of the left, right & centre in the future.

So you'll fire the stars who break impartiality rules but not programme producers who rig guests and audiences of semi political programmes.

Don’t watch this space. Second thoughts, don’t watch the BBC.

A first major victory for right-wing DefundTheBBC campaign. Tory right & supporters now have de facto control over BBC bosses. bbcpm et al have been self censoring, while senior ministers have refused to appear on BBCr4today. Next comedy Stasi. Then total demise.

When I worked for the BBC I was told by an editor not to do anything that the Tories wouldn’t like because they’re always complain’.

He hass vays of makink you right ving!

Well he won't last long, and walk away with a massive payout funded by Gary Linekar and Little Mix....

The BBC is far from being impartial on some subjects. On Russia & other regime change targets of the West the BBC is wholly partial in communicating U.S. & UK state narratives & convey malicious intent. There's zero objectivity in such cases, only a demonizing ethos of bias.

Davie’s claim did better than others on Brexit is a joke. Perhaps he should examine the make up of BBC Dateline London for four years, totally dominated by remain journos every week. Clueless. DCMS julianknight15 OliverDowden ABridgen ajcdeane afneil bbcpress

A lot about Twitter , but don’t side line applying it to on air !!

Yeah...ex footy players’ bias is the problem. Political editors not so much bbclaurak

'Brave New World ' Wrong book , Mr Knight...I think you must mean 1984

His problem is the opposite....if voices of dissent walk, no one will watch a government propaganda machine! He won’t have a business left to run!

👇🏻

A former BBC employee asked by his boss Boris to make sure no one says anything mean about him. Let's just have North Korean TV shall we ?

How about starting with the biased BBC news from twitter that will be a great start!

Then the BBC needs to tell us where the 'centre line' on every single issue is. Are they really saying equal balance needs to be given to flat earthers as globers? And how does that differ to unicorn seeking leavers and realist remainers? Is no concept ridiculous, now?

best greetings from Hungary, Russia and Turkey. Critical journalism once was a hallmark of the BBC. Happy propaganda then.

Another scam! ScumMedia DefundBBC DefundTheBBC I have!!

You can hear Lineker laughing at him now Davie is a weak man just brushed aside by BBC senior staff

Good stuff

Well that’s just terrifying.

BBC News throwing dead cats everywhere on a very bad day!

Yeah right

Blimey, he’ll have no staff left

It’s almost like the government is purposefully trying to destroy the BBC while helping their mates start a dedicated right-wing news channel. How soon till we get huwbbc presenting the news like this?

Sounds like something from the Kremlin

Yeah, he says that, but then he keeps Lineker on, the most mouthy opinionated person ever!

Aka your not aloud to say anything negative about the government

Does that include politically appointed Chairmen and Director Generals

What criteria will be used to assess impartiality? A monologue about Gary Lineker with a weird aside about Zoe Ball isn’t a clear set of guidelines.

i hope they come in the many

That's BBC news in trouble.

Another nail in that coffin which is the BBC!

Jackanory Jackanory.. or which window are we looking through today children... Arched Round or Square?

I know that when I hear news I don’t like it’s because the news is wrong. It’s literally the ONLY explanation.

To be fair when political incompetence has been turned into an art form by this Government, journalists and commentators must speak up !

Cough bbclaurak cough. 🙄

And the Tories speak about freedom of speech as a fundamental freedom. Andrew Neil tweeted some pretty serious stuff. Good job he's retired to work for Fox News type right wing organisation.

'...when government fires MP's for lying.'

Thats most of the BBC gone then!!!!

Hostile takeover continues at pace... GB Where are you? 👀 Are you even watching as your country is stolen from you...?

Ministry of Truth?

That’s great. Gary Lineker for one and then Fiona Bruce.

You don't tell folk what to say BBC star or not. ...🤦🙏

I'll believe it when I see it ... now what about all those 'stars' and journalists who used heir BBC platform to actively try to stop Brexit and undermine the recent elections?

When will he be firing GaryLineker then

Will this work both ways

Hence why Andrew Neil jumped, Tufton street will be livid.
