If people are upset about this they shouldn't direct their anger against the police or CPS but against the woman who made false allegations and tried to wreck lives. If you are innocent there won't be anything on the device to contradict your allegation

It’s evidence to build a case or drop one.

Obviously a slow news day. Apparently Phil Collins has a daughter who wears clothes.....

The fuss is every photo, every message that is on ur fone even if deleted can stil be accessed by the police are u willing to let not 1 but several police see these 🤔

Not news. The police have always had this power. Scaremongering.

Unfortunately there have been cases where the evidence from mobile phones has been critical in determining the validity of a rape case and stopping innocent people of being convicted. This has been the trigger for this.... rape is a brutal and unforgivable crime.

Only reason someone would not want to hand their phone over is if they had something to hide. IE: false accusers. Bloody good job I say.

I have plenty to hide on my phone, I'd hate to hand it over to anyone.....but I thought this rape thing was like the worst thing that could happen? Apparently not.....handing over your phone is worse?

If they want to know if the woman had previously been in contact, then why don't they check the man's phone ! Or is that too simple 😕

Yes, let's assume all allegations of rape are genuine, despite evidence to the contrary, and stop the police actually seeking to investigate them.

Although it must be upsetting it’s better the Police and authorities know everything that the defence would use anyway if a case went to court than being surprised in court with what may be on those phones

Evidence is evidence

Have I missed something? I don't understand the fuss. What would I have to hide on my phone? The police can already access our phone messages via our provider which records everything we send and receive. Ditto ISP.

What about naming accusers who lie about rape it's to easy to make these claims knowing you stay anonymous

I’m confused by the backlash, surely police is already taking their phones as part of the investigation? Surely you investigate all angles of a case to get to the truth!? If your a victim of rape, your phone is tve least of your worries

Not backlash.... It's a reasonable demand... Before you put someone away for 20+ years to rot in a cell you may at least be 100% confident you got it right

This is disgusting! It takes a hell of a lot of strength in the victim female or male to come forward and report acts like this and now the people who are meant to be here to protect them are making things so much harder, what exactly do we pay the police for these days?

Phones taken for evidence I presume. To build a case I guess, to lock the actual rapists away for a long time maybe. And also to have evidence to send false accusers away for the same length of time. Sounds good to me. Crack on.

Why is full disclosure an issue? The innocent have nothing to hide.

Not a victim. Unless someone is convicted. It’s accuser and accused. CheckYourTerminology

Not a victim until its proven. Nothing wrong with asking someone who has made the allegation for help to try and get a conviction. Sensationalism at it's best.

Demanding rape victims hand over their phones is an intrusion too far | Dawn FosterNew police guidelines mean that even fewer assaults will be reported, says Guardian columnist Dawn Foster 'It is not true that complainants in rape cases must automatically hand over personal data on their digital devices ' Why? If it's a matter of locking someone up for 10-30 years then all evidence is relevant, the victim has anonymity. This is an appallingly unfortunately phrased headline.

Why might rape victims refuse to give their phones to police?Victims’ groups fear demand for access to digital records could deter complainants Because they haven’t done anything wrong? Excellent article. Too right. Volunteering information should be the right of the victim - this should not be enforced. Enforcing / forcibly taking - is exactly akin to the attitude of the rapist. Horrible. a) Because they're vulnerable already and don't want their private lives further exposed. b) Because they are lying about the rape. Either option is entirely possible. This is why police detectives exist. And this is why the presumption of innocence exists.

Rape victims told to hand over mobile phones or see attackers walk freeThe new policy has already attracted criticism, with privacy and women’s campaign groups saying it treats rape victims like suspects, subjecting them to a “digital strip search” and deterring them from coming forward. In which I explain why examining complainants’ phones, though no doubt intrusive, is ultimately necessary: A “digital strip search” such an edgy provocative name for simply wanting to check a persons phone for evidence... you know like in almost all criminal cases..? I don’t think checking a persons phone for evidence is too much to ask or in anyway insensitive. Bullshit, it's a way of embarrassing women into Not reporting rape, by nosing into there private life, to help the numbers game

Rape victims asked to hand phones to policeProsecutions may not go ahead if police are not given access to emails, messages and photographs. If there’s nothing to hide then why not? Too many have cried wolf & has now ruined it for the real victims to be heard & trusted properly by the police. Why are you giving air time to that bloody foul idiot who thinks if his phone's taken if he's a suspected offender then it's fair for the victim's phone to be taken? There aren't 2 sides here. You wouldn't support other crime victims being blamed - not if they were male anyway.
