When 11-year-old Carl returned to his primary school in south-east London this week almost everything had changed. He spoke to the BBC after lessons every day to paint a picture of a school in lockdown.I hadn't put on my uniform in months, and it felt strange. I couldn't wear my tie - the school said it was to avoid any infection from ties dragging across different surfaces. I could only take a bottle of water in with me and no bag.
We had Maths and English today and we ate our lunch in the classroom. When it came to outdoor play, the playground had been divided up into squares and you could choose three or four friends from your class to be in a square with you, while still social distancing. Once you had chosen, you would stay with the same people for outdoor play until the end of term. I looked at two of my friends. It took just one glance and we knew the three of us would be in a square together.
In our PE lesson we had a competition between different groups, you all had your own tennis ball and one of the things we had to do was bowl the ball, and if you hit the wicket your group got a point. We also practised our fast footwork by weaving in and out of cones. We don't see anyone else from the other classes during the day as they do different activities at different times and they enter and leave the school at different times too.
This is my last year at primary school. There would usually be a huge party for us at the end of term and we'd take part in Year 6 productions. It's a shame I won't get to experience these. We had Design and Technology today and learnt about mechanics, and we wrote a description of the main character in a book we have been reading called Rooftoppers.
If this article is telling the truth, it is really awful.
..sometimes the ball was not meant to be caught.. Was it a ball Was it just because a stone was not conveniently available at that time... And if the ball is not available, there is always air...
...throw it in the air...
Is there any point in controlling this now when the protests is allowed nationwide?
Be creative, throw it to yourself.
Next story from will be people suing the schools for:- 1. allowing their kids to catch a ball. 2. not allowing their kids to catch a ball. 3. failing to catch their kids ball. 4. allowing the BBC to influence schools. 5. not following BBC guidance
I enjoyed reading his diary but it also makes me feel sad for the kids.
Just wear gloves 🙈 ... Be careful taking them off, spray with Flash-type bleach, leave alone for 2 hours. ..........Wash hands 👍 I deal with deliveries like this. ... Stop all this flapping and use common sense ❗
Back-to-school diary: ‘You can throw the ball, but no-one can catch it’ That is the problem with kids in the new millenium, no hand-eye coordination.
'you could kick the ball to someone, but not touch the ball with your hands or tackle anyone'. England's goal keeper's have been playing like this for years
lies lies lies lies
my child is not and will not be attending school until they stop the social distancing rules, the virus does not bother me its the fact she can not be a child at school following rules that a child her age can not stick to nor understand
Haven't you scumbags heard? Social distancing is over.
BBC you sink lower everyday. You are a disgrace.
IMPORTANT: Please check out my profile if you are protesting or know someone who is. I have a whole thread based on precautions, tips etc. It’s the first tweet. Share it as much as you can.Stay safe!
Heart breaking
Other generations have had far worse experiences I think it will be ok if we toughen up a bit
Scaremongering. As ever. We have had chn back all week and they have loved being back. They are fine with the social distancing (as best we can) and are thrilled to see their friends and be learning again. Everyone happy.
Not all rosy in schools. Grandson upset doing the same work in school as he was at home. Not 2m apart room too small. Playtime spent at desks whole of break as it was raining. He doesn’t know teacher. He cries because he hates it so much.Used to love it
If you tolerate this, then your children will be next... Fascism
Sadly.... Walls make great ball buddies tho.
Sickening. Social distancing in schools is child abuse.
I bet Bradford is pleased the government sent their kids back to school... This happened at Saint Pauls CofE school, Bradford
You can throw Convid-19, but no-one is allowed to catch it
The madness of social distancing must end. Children traumatised. Don't touch anyone, don't sit beside anyone, don't lend anyone a pen or pencil, don't walk to school with anyone, don't stand beside anyone in the playground... Not so much school more a Gulag.
Welcome to my childhood 😭
If yr wearing gloves?
Sounds like the 1980s English cricket team
Yeah that will work teachers
Thank god for hindsight.
