This new Netflix series, based on Richard Gadd's 2019 play, is complex, urgent and challenging

, a woman who frequented a pub he worked at in his 20s, became obsessed with him, convinced they were in a romantic relationship that never existed. On screen she’s called Martha, and from the moment she gets her hands on the email address of Donny Dunn , he’s subjected to a stream of intrusive messages.

Donny dreams of being a comedian, but he’s struggling to find success. He spends his days working in a north London pub, trying to fit in with blokey workmates while grappling with his sexuality and self-hatred.result in a charge. “Why’d it take you so long to report it?” asks the officer on duty when Donny seeks police intervention. Yet even when he’s finally convinced himself it’s worth reporting his stalker, the process proves far from straightforward.

This seven-part Netflix series replicates elements of Gadd’s play. He used his stalker’s real emails on stage and here, clumsy, overfamiliar words are typed out on screen, addressed to “baby reindeer”, her nickname for him. Gadd is our narrator, his voiceover adding introspection to scenes from his past. When 40-something Martha first enters his pub looking dejected: “I felt sorry for her. That’s the first feeling I felt.

The finale might be a room-splitter. Gadd dangles final confrontations with his stalker and his rapist, but denies us a neat or empowering ending, leaving something bleaker that stretches our empathy for all concerned.is rewardingly complex, challenging our perceptions of what a victim looks like, and asking urgent questions about the support available to both mentally ill people and victims of stalking.
